Woody Allen's new movie devolves into girl-on-girl
February 7th 2008 22:43
Woody Allen's upcoming project, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", is lighting up the film blogs with rumour that actresses Scarlett Johanason and Penelope Cruz share a naughty lesbian sex scene in the movie.
Is this what Allen's been reduced to? I feel as if Woody feels slighted by the American film industry... he's had to move his productions to Europe, where there's more money for him to do his thing. After the scandal with Mia Farrow, New Yorkers turned their pastrami backs on Allen, passing on his projects in favour of new blood.
I'm still in Woody's camp, though... I've only really started to enjoy his films in the past few years, and he's convinced me that he's one of the most talented, thoughtful filmmakers of our time.
This latest news, though, makes me wonder if the news was dropped to stir up a little excitement about the new movie. The media's happy to report on "Juno" and "Superbad", but no one greets an Allen film like they used to.
I'll still watch any film of Allen's though, even if I suspect that he's pandering to a crowd of men that want to see boobies.
And it's hard not to see the appeal, when you see pictures of Scarlett Johansson that look like this:
Yes, I want to see the scene. Is that really so wrong? Though I'll go to see the film when it comes out, and I'll be talking myself up like I'm a great admirer of Allen's work, there'll be a small, lecherous part of me that is excited to see Cruz and Johansson bury themselves in a libidinous canyon of lust.
I'll watch the film, and I'll still go and rent all those old Allen-films and watch them at home with roguish glee. When that old Woody typeface hits the black background, I get a little warm feeling in the bottom of my lungs, the security of knowledge in the fact that, at the very least, I'll be entertained.

Woody Allen films on the whole annoy the crap out of me. But I do like that typeface.
Of all his movies these are the ones I liked best:
Sleeper, Manhattan, Zelig, Broadway Danny Rose, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Bullets Over Broadway, Deconstructing Harry, Celebrity, and Sweet and Lowdown (the last one I saw).
I'd like to see his first, What's Up Tigerlily? where he bought the rights to an unkown Japanese movie and re-dubbed the dialogue entirely, re-cut the movie, and turned it into a comedy-caper flick.
But the prospect of Scarlet in the nude does draw me toward watching a Woody Allen movie again ...

Yes, Scarlett will not be nude, it seems, unless Woody's talked her into it.

However he seems to have gotten more morbid as time went on and less funny.
These days I see Woody Allen I do not get so excited

I agree with Spennies - if this is part of it, I don't think Woody would be pushing it, the media would have just jumped on it and ignored everything else.
Definitely interesting though...

I am intrigued by this movie but overall I am with Bryn. Like some of them...irritated by others. Thanks so much for the Henry Rollins clip. Like the red blooded
men excited about Scarlett's ample bosom, Henry Rollins...mmmmm smart and handsome with tats to boot what's a gal not to like.

lilla, even though I said I was skeptical, I trust Allen's judgement, generally - he probably managed to show Scarlett that he wasn't being exploitative... we'll see though...
tracy, I'm not a fan of Johansson's, but it's hard not to be swayed by physical attributes...
michaelie, it'll be hard not to notice after this!
bryn, red-blood, indeed.
nathan - it's interesting that you mention it... after this Barcelona flick, Allen's next movie will star Larry David!

Well you know I'm a lover of Woody's work but have to admit to his slipping in quality of the 90's and 00's. The lesbian scene fails to entice alone, I just hope he has a decent script on which to hang this easy marketing hook.
I'm not a big fan of Scarlett, Ghost World is the only time she impressed me, though Lost in Translation was a good movie. Pretty? Yes! Talented? No real evidence to support the claim.

I agree - Hollywood media-types are quick to label Johansson as an old-school actress, talented, retro-attractive and elegant. I haven't seen her do anything outstanding, either, and I find her voice to be particularly grating.
