The Subway Soulja Girl: verbal abuse and lunacy on a train in the US

May 11th 2008 23:37
Some of our Australian readers may often wonder "What's going on in America? This is a country that invented the Internet, deep-fried Coca Cola, elected George Bush, worships Britney Spears and built the atom bomb. What's up?"

Well, I don't know much about Spears and atom bombs, but I think America is a fabulous place to visit, with breathtaking scenery, a powerful musical history and the ability to entertain 24/7.

This video, from Fazed, is footage from a subway train, with a young black girl battlin' an old black lady. About what, I have no idea. What is she saying? I've only got half an idea. I can't even decide if I'm wildly entertained or filled with disgust at this public behaviour.

One of the Fazed commenters notes that this is from a train in Atlanta:

"Well I'll be damned! I should have known that was in Atlanta.

That right there is why, if gas goes to twenty fucking dollars a gallon, I will NOT ride MARTA. I've seen too much shit like that on their trains. "

What's a MARTA? Another commenter handles the definition:

"THATS WHY I DON'T RIDE THE FUCKIN MARTA (MOVING AFRICANS RAPIDLY THROUGH ATLANTA)"

The video is from a hiphop video site, perhaps posting this as praise... the comments underneath the video are disturbingly incisive, lamenting the state of youth and her choice of "Soulja Boy".

In-vitro update
: I just watched the entire video... it goes from abusive rap battles to schizophrenic freakout...

Crazy Girl: "I'm pressin' charges... I'm pressin' charges... Where mah du-rag at? "

Entire Bus: "It's on your head!"

Crazy Girl: "I'm pressin' charges.... I'm pressin' charges...."

So why did she abuse everyone except the person holding the camera? Looks like a put-up job to me...

America? You probably mean just the USA.

When I say America, I mean the USA. When referring to the continents, I usually say 'North America' and 'South/Latin American'

Reminds me of Sydney Cityrail.

I loved that somebody finally slapped that do-rag right off her head. Seriously though, I can't believe it took so long for anyone to stand up for the old lady. I think that is the saddest part, that nobody is game enough to stand up when someone is being attacked. I could just imagine if it was my extremely feisty 70 year old mum, she would have pulled herself up to her entire 4'11 height, given her a good hard slap to the back of the head and told soulja-girl she's an idiot and to sit down and shut up. She's verbally tackled a few drunken louts on public transport...in shopping centres...on the street, haha.

All I can say is ice-ice baby. Drugs are bad kiddies, just say no.

I (sort of) work with transit software--I think MARTA probably stands for Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.

I can't believe that there's no 'emergency' strip (none that I could discern, anyway) along the walls inside the train. The Toronto ones have them, and you press them in case someone is ill or if there's any kind of disturbance. Since subway operators can't observe what's going on in all the subway cars, this kind of crap does happen, although I don't think I've seen something this protracted on a Toronto subway. I also can't believe that it took that long for someone to do something.

cheryl, irene, a lot of people comment on the fact that no one intervened, but I don't know if it's actually that important. The crazy girl didn't get violent, though it looked like she was going to - maybe they were all waiting to see how good her rhymes were?

" I usually say 'North America' and 'South/Latin American'"

Are you impliying that for you South America is the same as Latin America? Then something went wrong in your primary school geography lessons!

Have you ever heard of countries like Surinam, Guyana, etc.? They are in South America and they are far from being Latin American countries.

anon - South America is not Latin America?

edit: just looked it up. I learned something today. Latin America is NOT the same as South America.

Latin America refers only to the countries where Latin derived languages are the primary language.

so, anon, thanks.

Actually this is not an "everyday" occurrence in black America or America in general, it came out a short while later that the young lady has severe bipolar disorder and was off her meds at the time.

Unfortunately that sight is not that uncommon here in U.S. Anyone who has the displeasure to use public transportation will tell you that accident's like this, sometimes more severe sometimes less, happen on daily basis.

Cheers,
Chimbles

This woman was arrested after authorities saw the video on youtube. Her name is Nafiza Ziyad, she has bipolar disorder and had stopped taking her medication. This could have happened anywhere and to anyone at any time. It has nothing to do with her being American or black, she's a sick person in need of help.
