Vanilla Ice on SNL
January 18th 2007 18:08
Ah, looking back, it's easy to see our folly. Or our cultural slips in trends and fashion. In the 90s, it was 'hip' to look down on the 80s, with the big hair and glam rock.
Now, of course, the 80s are huge, and we can finally look at the 90s with disgust.
I mean real DISGUST. Nauseating, even.
Perhaps the worst offender, or the most hapless victim, depending on your point of view, was Vanilla Ice, white rapper extraordinaire. I've picked on him before, covering his cult classic movie, Cool As Ice. Since being used as a dirty sock for the creative ejaculations of the recording industry, Mr. Ice has tried to reinvent himself according to trends.
He tried rap metal. And celebrity boxing.
No matter what he does in the present, or the future, we'll always have his performance on SNL to remember the good ol' days.
It's all bad. The dancing is ludicrous, the outfits unbelievable. I imagine this was the 'hip hop' image back then, but for the love of Buddha, track suits? You are not De La Soul.
In fact, it's so bad that Jim Carrey gave he performance of a lifetime doing a Vanilla Ice parody:

Ice Ice Baby is a bloody catchy song though.
The Jim Carey send up may well be the funniest thing Jim's ever done.

Robert Van Winkle was cool....so cool he was in Madonna's vanilla 'Sex' book....he was obviously under pressure to perform...after 8 months, he was put on ice, ice baby...
The fact that I know this stuff makes me very very sad.
...in manner not in matter....and really shows my age.
Missy Elliot dresses in tracksuits.
...de la Foul.

miswanderlust, teaching children anything about Vanilla Ice should be discouraged!
John, I'm very fond of Carrey's early comedy stuff. Now when I watch Ace Ventura, I can't get over how strange an actor he is...
kylie, we all know you've got a soft spot for Van Winkle!

I know a lot of scary Rugby stuff too...for instance Stephen Larkham's inside leg measu...kidding!...of course I don't know that...wish I did....
KW....
Tis fact that I studied law and cannot remember a thing
Tis friction that I can remember "stuff"* like this
...go figure.
Should have drank Black Russians during lectures instead of doing a Rap van Winkle!! Pun so intended.

I reckon the ultimate fashion statement of the 90's was the Commodore!

Joe, the Commodore? The car? The band?
Adrian, was floor humping ever in fashion?
duskdevi, being polite to the ref is for the backs. They've certainly got enough time to say flowery words while we're scrummaging...
