The independent Australian-owned distribution company Umbrella Entertainment yesterday announced the DVD release of the highly controversial documentary, The 10 Conditions of Love.
The 10 Conditions of Love follows the struggle of Rebiya Kadeer, the leader of the Uyghur people, an oppressed Muslim population of China’s Xinjiang province. Kadeer currently lives in the United States, where she has quickly gained media coverage and many influential friends, but her campaign has seen members of her family imprisoned back in China.
A storm of controversy swirled around The 10 Conditions of Love at last year’s Melbourne International Film Festival when the Chinese embassy demanded festival director Richard Moore remove the film from the schedule. The festival organisers refused and the MIFF’s website was subsequently hacked.
Since then, the film has become the subject of worldwide press coverage through the BBC, CNN and the New York Times. It’s now also something of a political hot potato in Australia after the national broadcaster, ABC Television, withdrew The 10 Conditions of Love from a planned broadcast, the film becoming a subject of senate debate as well as front page news in The Australian and key news items in Encore, The Age and on ABC Radio.
In an interview with Encore the films’ producer John Lewis talked about the ABC’s cancellation affecting the original DVD release, which Umbrella had planned to coincide with the broadcast.
The distribution company is now excited to finally get the film out to the viewing public, stating in their press release that, “Umbrella Entertianment’s DVD release of the film will provide the opportunity for this vital, controversial film to be seen by as wide an audience as possible and raise awareness for the plight of the Kadeer family and the Uyghur people.”
