Turning "Another Stakeout" into a cult classic
April 24th 2008 23:59
It's a weird bit of meta-gaming the film industry... Paul Sheer and Andy McKay have teamed up and asked the internet community to make the awful "Another Stakeout" into a cult classic.
From Spoutblog:
The reason? No good reason. Just to do it, I suppose, though, on some level, they're satirizing the ability of film audiences to create popularity years later. It's happened over and over again - "The Princess Bride", "The Shawshank Redemption", "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
But "Another Stakeout"? I think I actually saw it on VHS and remember groaning in frustration at a movie that combined the comedic talents of Richard Dreyfuss, Emelio Estevez and Rosie O'Donnell.
You'll notice that the Wikipedia page for the movie has been altered to reflect the fake cult status.
From Spoutblog:
"..comedian/Human Giant star Paul Scheer implores The Internet to join him, Adam McKay (writer/director of Anchorman and Talladega Nights) and several of their friends and colleagues in mobbing the message boards attached to the IMDb entry for the questionable classic, Another Stakeout.
“Come join us and help us turn this movie into a giant cult hit for absolutely no good reason,” Scheer writes. “Let’s forward this e-mail and flood the site to the point where there are Another Stakeout festivals and conventions and midnight showings with people in costume saying lines along with the movie ala Rocky Horror Pic Show.”"

"It was named "Most Important movie of the 1990's!" by Joel Siegel at from Good Morning America and some film critics refer to this movie as "the greatest sequel" ever, even better than films like The Godfather Part II or Aliens, though this point is arguable. Despite this, the movie fell into some obscurity, but recently it has been rediscovered and elevated to a cult status. It's considered a key film, and several actors and directors, such as Kristen Bell, Eli Roth or John Waters had expressed their admiration for this film.[citation needed]"
