Top 10 Scariest Videogames

October 30th 2006 18:52
Just in time for Halloween comes this video compilation of the Top 10 Scariest Video Games - from GameTrailers.com.

I'm shuddering just thinking about it.

Film fanatics often turn their noses down at video games, scoffing at the shallow narratives and senseless violence. But as this clip shows, improved technology and careful attention to atmosphere and mood have forged a new arena.

Damn, these games are scary. Drawing from classic horror films, some of the newer games take horror to a new level, as you become the main character, chased by zombies and ghosts.

No, I can't play these games. I'm too easily drawn into the video game world, and I'll go into shock the first time a zombie bites me from behind.

Instead, I prefer games that have ubiquitous sunshine and beautiful green fields. With rainbows and marshmallow bunnies. And smiling leprechauns, not the evil ones.

That was a great list.
I've never played Silent Hill, my favourite scary games are Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil, just watching those clips of them freaks me out.

Call me old fashioned, but video games just don't do it for me ...
The only ones I ever played were innocuous arcade games when I was a lad ... y'know, Pacman, Defender, Galaga, Asteroids, Daytona ...

hmm, the game that scared me most was Doom 3, I dont care if it was supposed to be generic scares, it fit the bill alright. Alien VS predator, playing as human scared the crap out of me the first time... F.E.A.R was also quite frightening... Silent Hill 3 was... disturbing...

I'm surprised F.E.A.R didn't make the cut, but not too surprised...

and oblivion does have it sscarier moments down in the dungeons as you infiltrate crazy cults... but not really that scary...

Ahmed, I try not to play horror games, but I agree with you on one thing: Oblivion gets scary... I had my first run-in with zombies and my heart was pounding.

No, I prefer to lob fireballs at the peacefully grazing deer.

I refuse to play FEAR. Any game that tries to be freaky like J-horror is not what I want to play.

Ah, Bryn... I would have thought that you'd have gotten a kick out of the newest horror games. Did you watch the video?

Ian, I'll never play Resident Evil. And they remade it? Why?!

Cibby,
I did, but I reiterate, video games don't do it for me ... period.

If your PC can run oblivion it most certainly can run Lego Star Wars, which is a cheerful game that you will enjoy (not hte least bit scary)...

I can't play oblivion on my computer, so I go to a Net cafe by the uni to play it, once a week!

It's too bad, because I can't really get into the game, like I did with Morrowind!

Doom 3 got my younger sibling so scared, closed the actual computer monitor soon as a fat zombie walked out of a darkened corner... wasn't THAT scary...

The graphics on the remake were absolutely stunning! Well worth doing.

Ian, that's exactly what I mean... the remake looks fantastic, and there's no way I'm going to play it.

Resident Evil is THE SHIT. It's just like being in Night of the Living Dead. I've played a few of them but have lost track.

I love how it's more about survival than blowing the shit out of monsters, like you have to ration your ammo and stuff to have enough for the big bad, and sometimes resort to using just a knife to fight the oncoming zombie hordes. I think that's what makes this game so scary: you never feel like an unstoppable hero, just someone trying to get out alive--just like the characters in Romero's zombie films.

I think Hellvis is talking about the original/remake.

Resident Evil 4 was a little different than the others. You had more ammo and bigger weapons, although it was still scary and a bloody good game.

My personal favourite is Resident Evil 0.

Yeah, I played a few on the Playstation, and the bloody Dreamcast of all things. I'm pretty sure I've played the two originals and 0 too. I'm so out of touch when it comes to video games.
