The White Masai - Film Preview
July 17th 2006 21:24
Opening on July 20th at Dendy Cinemas across Australia, The White Masai looks to be an inspiring piece of cinema from Africa.
Based on an autobiography by Corinne Hoffman, it recounts a European woman's journey to Africa, where she falls in love with a Masai warrior and decides to stay in Kenya.
Most reviewers praise this film for the visual splendor of the Kenyan scenery, or the gender struggles of a European coming to terms with a traditional society, but I'm going to advocate this film for the unsaid truth. It's a movie about a white woman going to Africa and leaving her white boyfriend for a black dude.
We've all heard the popular saying 'Once you go black, you can't go back'.
I don't know if that's true, but that seems to be the point of this film. Or would be, if I had seen it. All I can really do is make some vague remarks: ah, um, visually stunning, a compelling story.
What everyone is thinking, but no one is brash enough to say... did the main character leave her Swiss boyfriend because of a phenomenal difference in penis size?
We might have to wait for the DVD special extras to answer that.
