The Secret Rage
April 11th 2006 22:49
Over on SecretSydney, Amy is dropping hooks on terrible cafes in the Rocks.
Why stop there?
There are terrible cafes all around Sydney, and someone needs to stand up to them! They're all assuming that we're happy paying $4 for a stale croissant, or $9 for a 'gourmet handcrafted artisanal wheat-based creation' which turns out to be a ham-and-cheese sandwich.
What Amy says is on target:
"Yet café opening hours tend to be geared to little old pensioners and at-home mums, with no regard for those of us confined to lands starved of cafes until 5pm when we are free to sit and relax over our jitters-inducing beverages of choice."
Where I'm living, in Ultimo, there's a ridiculous number of cafes, and nearly all of them are nas-tay. They're carbon copies of an idea of a cafe, lifted from slick French movies or coffee magazines at Ikea.
On Mountain street, there's 6 cafes on two blocks. Why?
And, like Amy said, they all close at about 4:30, making it impossible to relax after work or school, forcing me to go into the bar. Forcing!
Er... Amy'll probably jeer at me for not talking about movies in this post, so here's something to get back on topic.
In Montreal, there's a short film festival called Glitchfest, and every year it gets bigger and bigger.
The last time I was in Montreal, I was on the technical crew for one of the shorts, a fantastic little number called 'Tira-Mistu'. I even had a brief, but bizarre cameo as the guy holding the bacon-flavoured cotton candy.
All the films are available to watch on the site, and many of them are straight-up amazing (although many of them are as excrerable as, well, excrement).

Here is your mission, should you choose to accept it: find me a decent cafe in Ultimo. Never mind the fact that nobody goes there, SOMEONE other than you must live there... right?
Ps. Interesting that, in terms of word percentage, my comment has more movie content than your recent posts =P
Hasta la vista, baby!

I can't believe you don't like coffee. Can't imagine there's much for you over at Secret Sydney... *sniff* At least I got the opportunity for another shameless plug.
By the way, the preview for The Hill Have Eyes scared me a little. Seemed like they took all the things I'm scared of and put them in one film. It has everything!
... except spiders...

It's interesting what men and women find scary. Men, like myself, are more likely to be scared of the supernatural, ie. ghosts, zombies, etc.
Women are generally more frightened of serial killers and rapists, with good reason, since the targets are often women.
I personally don't find killer movies very scary, partially because I like to believe that I'm a low-level superhero, and could easily bash a killer.
But infectious zombies? We're doomed.

Maybe its just because men live in a fantasy world where they are invincible (nay, low level superheroes) whereas women tend to dwell in reality where it's people who are the real threat? (not aliens, not vampires, etc)
You want to watch out or I'll write a review of Capote (3.5-4 *s).
PS. Flattery will get you everywhere =P

I'm not really afraid of vampires... they're like the nerds of the undead world, always wearing capes and quoting Edgar Allen Poe.
Weird Japanese ghosts are pretty terrifying though, no?
You're going to write a review? Can't wait to read it!
