The 42-inch LCD TV from LG - 42LG70YD
October 9th 2008 21:35
This week, a gigantic package arrived at my house, my flatmates cooing around the massive box with 'LG' written on it.
Inside was the 42LG70YD, a 42-inch flatscreen LCD television; as we opened the box it became immediately apparent - where were we going to put it?
Generally, consumer electronics aims to make things smaller. The latest iPods are starting to resemble tiny flat rocks and mobile phones are approaching a Zoolander-state form factor.
Televisions, though, go big. The loss of profits at the box office are mirrored by the concept of creating a home theatre in your living room; at the center, a massive flatscreen television.
Up till very recently, it's been about plasma TVs, which allowed for terrific picture brightness at large sizes. LG has released the 42LG70YD, an LCD TV that combines the big screen, but the sensible power consumption of the LCD.
My one flatmate peered behind the TV.
"It's got HDMI!" he exclaimed in glee, switching to SBS in high definition, a picture so clear that reality appeared to blur slightly in comparison.
"It's got S-Video and USB!" he exhaled, looking at the side of the TV.
Holding up the remote: "It's got automatic tuning of channels!" - the TV, in its HAL-like wisdom, began scanning our Australian airwaves, grabbing at the smoky tendrils of free-to-air television, including all the high definition channels.
I pushed him out of the room, but in the meantime, my other flatmate picked up the remote and cooed.
"It's got Survivor and CSI:Miami!" she exclaimed.
I attempted to roll my eyes in disgust, but in the emitted light of the 42LG70YD, it probably looked to her like I did nothing. I snatched the remote from her hands and pushed her out of the room.
Somehow, my girlfriend slipped through the cracks and was sitting cross-legged on the floor, remote in hand.
"It's got documentaries about children's health on ABC!" she chirruped happily.
Sighing, I gave up, and I let them all squirrel in, fighting over the remote, lying on the couch, absorbing the radiative programming from the television.
Much, much later, I finally got some alone time with the television. Looking at my pile of DVDs to review, I selected one, sent to me by Umbrella Entertainment: "Emanuelle Around the World", the notorious softcore sexploitation movie starring Laura Gemser.
As the movie started up, Gemser's perfect features were magnified to 42 inches of startling beauty. She disrobed, freely displaying her body, her luscious skin appearing to glow on the 42LG70YD, her luxurious skin tone awesomely replicated in 4.3 Trillion colours...
"It's got beautiful naked women!" I shrieked to no one in particular.
The 42LG70YD is available in Australia from all major retailers

My TV has somehow short circuited and stopped both my DVD player and VCR from working and given me an almightly electric shock. The aerial cable is Gaff taped to the back.
It will take me about three years on my part time salary to save for one of these so I'll keep my eye out for the comp!

I am still owned by StGeorge bank paying my TV off - it is half the width of my lounge room and would allow it to sleep in my bed with me if it wasn't so uncomfortable!

If I had one of those I'd hook it up to my computer monitor, since I see everything through my PC anyway...

David and I have been looking to buy a 42" TV for a while but haven't been able to justify the expense so far. We'd love to enter, but why can't we if we live in Melbourne. We'll pay for the shipping if we win.

I don't think our apartment is big enough for one of these, but I still want one.
So is LCD better for movies or Plasma?

It bleeds after a while and you'll end up with a screen full of black dots you can do nothing about...
