Christian Bale to play John Conner in Terminator 4

November 22nd 2007 20:28
Terminator robot killing machine
Stunning news out of the primordial soup of the movie industry: Christian Bale, lead actor in American Psycho and Batman Begins, has signed on to play an adult John Conner in Terminator 4.

This is serious stuff. Everyone wanted to punch John Conner back in Terminator 2, and I never got around to seeing the third installment. Christian Bale has built up a serious fan base around a strange selection of films, from blockbuster Hollywood stuff (Batman Begins, Shaft), to off-the-wall movies by fantastic directors (The Machinist, Rescue Dawn).

From MovieBlog:

"Yeah, the man who will play the lead character, John Conner (who was played by Nick Stahl in T:3 and Edward Furlong in T:2) is none other than Batman himself… Christian Bale."

The movie still has the potential to disappoint... the last movie, Terminator 3, did good numbers at the box office, but was considered the weakest in the trilogy. The new director, McG, is a music video director turned film director, and there's some heavy skepticism if he can handle the dark atmosphere required for the project...

Thinking back to the McG directed Charlies Angels, I am preparing myself for dissapointment in a run-of-the-mill action film not holding anything special against the overly repetitive genre.

After seeing MI:3 I was convinced of J.J.Abrams talent. He managed to avoid the classic mistakes in regular action films in regards to timing. (I always think back to the lowering door at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark that somehow reverses time.) The narrative was spectacular also - seeing the end at the beginning but having such an amazing twist really made the film. Not to mention the action scenes! It is a shame he is not directing this film.

I think the Terminator series lost it at the first sequel, T2. Yes the effects were good (outstanding at the time in regards to the liquid metal effect) but it was, at it's core, an action film.

What I enjoyed about the first film was the gritty realism, and an 80's punk, dark, somewhat underground setting enhanced this. Out of context, a robot with near-human qualities and an Austrian accent would sound unreal and silly - but in context it was incredibly real, making the legendary eye-cutting scene all the more cringe-worthy.

Saying that, I will still spend the £5 to see this film (though more likely to be around £2.50 through Orange Wednesdays - fantastic!!) and I hope I won't regret it.

Movies cost 5 pounds?!? new movies?

yes, the first movie was the only one that really gave us a fresh look... I loved the 2nd one, though, as I was bursting with teenage rage and a fondness for GNR.

We're all looking forwards to Cloverfield!

Well, student price at my local Vue is £5.30. Odeon's can be quite expensive, and it's annoying that I can no longer get away as a child... dam this facial hair! ^_^

I find it very hard to see action films as very much more than many moments of cool joined up. I enjoy it though. Even when the action genre is injected with a romantic storyline or character evolving plot, I still enjoy them, sometimes even more so when they are well written and well intertwined. Take Kung Fu Hustle as an example: amazing action sequences, with a deeply moving and inspiring (in my opinion) character evolving grounding.

But no one is indicating Cibbie, well not you here or the other commenter on your blog, whether Arnie is going to play the robot again? Last time I heard him interviewed about that, he said a categorical "no". In the light of that still being the case, I can't see it working without him.

However, possibly it could, if the genre was taken in a totally different direction...bit hard since the entire premise is built upon the Anrie robot and restructuring the past to fix the future, however, maybe they could, by saboutaging robot designs...dunno...but it intrigues me, on a production level, not as a fan, what will be done about all that.

And I agree, the first film was far more powerful dramatically, but, I also liked the second very much, that guy with the smile...the robot cop terminator, was very effective.

It is also extremely sad, that the boy who played the original role, as the boy John Conner, was turned down for the third one, because he was too drug addicted. Very sad indeed, because he was a fine actor, with a lot of promise in his career.

I wonder what has become of him now?

cheers

T3 should have been terminated before it began.

It only managed to set up the eternal sequal plot line.

Unplug this robot before it becomes Terminator verses Tranformers

henrah... sounds cheap!

fog, I'm pretty sure that Arnold is finished with the movie business... he's made the full move to being a 'respectable' politician...

Damo, go all out: Aliens vs. Terminatorredator vs. Transformers.

It'd be like a round robin tournament!

Actually, the rumour was Bale is to play the next Terminator, not John Connor. The actor who portrayed Connor in T3 apparently signed on to more than one sequel way back when ... all will be revealed soon, i'm sure, but either way ... and no offence to Bale, who I admire greatly ... this isn't a movie I'm going to be interested in.

The first one is such a chilling thriller that even the second becomes an inferior actioner beside it because of the enthralling dynamics of the original.

The third could have been worse, but was no cause for celebration. This 4th installment unfortunately is doomed before it starts with McG at the helm. Cut n paste hack that he is!
