Tasmanian Tiger Video Footage
February 21st 2007 18:51
They're considered extinct now, but the largest marsupial carnivore used to be the beautiful Tasmanian Tiger, or the Thylacine.
To Canadians, Tasmania is a weird place, full of bizarrely spinning Devils and amourous men that steal from the rick to give to the poor.
Then, last year, I met my first Tasmanian. He was a pretty nice guy, and he sold me his bike for $70. He lived a life like you'd expect on Neighbors, where he got a girlfriend over SMS, then proposed a week later. By the fourth week, he'd broken up with her to move in with his ex-girlfriend, who had just delivered their baby.
So, a tiger that can open its mouth 180 degrees? Totally believable.
This is footage of the last known Tasmanian Tiger, from 1933:

Also, the Tasmanian tiger was known for it's insane ability to open its mouth...

The Tasmanian Tiger was a forboding predator, but no much for the most dangerous animal on the planet, man.

The Tasmanian Tiger used to be found all over the mainland of Australia too but when the Aboriginals brought Dingos across the Dingos provided too much competition and drove mainland-Tasmanian Tigers to extinction... they only survived in Tasmania because the Tasmanian Aboriginals didn't bring Dingos with them. This is probably the same reason why the Tasmanian Devil survived too.
The biggest native Australian carnivore on the mainland is the Eastern Quoll - which is pretty much just the size of a cat, all other marsupial carnivores died out thanks to either the Dingo or (probably) because of the Aboriginals. At one point there were Marsupial Lions on the mainland, as well as a giant carnivorous duck-like creature that weighed half a tonne (imaginatively dubbed by scientists 'The Demon Duck of Doom'). Recent research has also turned up evidence of a carnivorous kangaroo.
