Super Troopers - Film Review
September 7th 2006 18:32
When I first heard of Super Troopers, it was when a friend recommended it to me. He said it was 'the funniest movie [he'd] ever seen', and tried to tell me about some of the jokes.
Two guys chug maple syrup.
A police officer says 'Meow' to a pulled-over motorist.
A police officer gets de-loused with icing sugar.
Whatever, right? Who needs to waste time with meaningless comedy? I mean, slapstick wen
After watching it, though, I was convinced that Super Troopers was one of the most original and devastatingly funny movies to have come out in recent years.
A police officer says 'Meow'?? Watch it:
See? See? See?
Super Troopers was created by an American sketch comedy group called Broken Lizard. They've put out a subsequent movie called Club Dread that was a critical failure, but the release of their new movie, Beerfest, is holding up well to comedic expectations.
What works so well in Super Troopers is the casual, easy-going acting of the five members of Broken Lizard. Each character is believable and fallible, and we laugh at their slacker take on life. The movie's plot advances in a serious direction, but the jokes keep coming, to the point where one guy is standing naked in a field with nothing but a metal can.
Super Troopers is full of tokens. The token nude scene, the token relationship stuff, the token bad guy with his bad guy assistants... this film is not inventing any new ground, here.
Oh, except the guy dressed as a guy fucking a bear.
You just have to see it, really, to believe it.
Or watch the beginning 6 minutes of the movie:

Sometimes, when I'm bored at home, I'll just throw in Super Troopers and skip to random parts. Just to have a chuckle. It's a great testament to the American film industry that great movies like this can be made for as little as $3 million dollars, and provide millions of people with hysterical entertainment.
