South Park Steve Irwin Parody

September 4th 2006 22:26
The best tribute to Steve Irwin would be this parody of his insane, reckless TV antics on South Park.

Actually, the best tribute to Steve Irwin would be a 24-m statue of Mr. Irwin, located in some faraway town. To remind us all that 'One Croc Hunter to Rule Them All'.

In the comments, I mentioned something unusual about Steve Irwin's reputation. When I first arrived in Australia, I told Aussies that I'd watched The Crocodile Hunter often, and that Australia seemed to be packed with hungry giant reptiles and poisonous animals.

Most Aussies laughed derisively and told me that Steve Irwin was 'a/an idiot/bogan/loser' and that that TV show was giving the rest of the world a false impression about Australia.

Now, however, Irwin has died, pierced through the heart by a stingray barb. And now, the TV is jammed with people paying their respects. And now, everyone has a fond memory or good-natured story to tell about Steve Irwin.

I guess it's only natural - like the passing away of a reviled family member. If Celine Dion were to pass away, Canadians would line up and down rue St. Catherine to pay their respects.

How about the locomotive named "Steve Irwin" that the new Adelaide-Alice-Darwin railway prepared for its inaugural train? They mothballed the tribute because of the adverse publicity that Irwin got from the child and crocodile incident.

Thanks for the link Cibby. Was thinking about this episode.

I think my feelings are mixed, though. I mean, I've been reading articles about Irwin all night, and every second one will start with "Crikey! He's dead".

In one sense this is a tribute, a salute, a celebration. But is it also disrespectful? I mean, doesn't it tend towards making the whole thing into a joke?

the interesting thing for me, is that nearly every Australian that I met has called Steve Irwin 'an idiot' and deplored his TV show, which sensationalizes Australian wildlife to the rest of the world.

Now that's he's passed away, everyone's got a fond memory of the guy. How quickly those opinions changed!

Anyway, he seemed like the kind of guy that would want people to make a joke about him.

To be honest, Steve Irwin was indeed a bit of a joke to many Australians. But I think everyone secretly harboured a fondness for his antics somewhere in the depths of their little aussie hearts.

Either way, he did great things for the Tourism Industry in Australia whether he was an idiot or not and he really did have a genuine love for Australia and it's wildlife. I think it's a damn shame that he died. But at least he died doing what he loved. How many people can say that?

P.S. If Celine Dion does ever die, I'll be thankful I don't live In Canada. There's only so much Celine a person can take and seeing as though Canada doesn't seem to be known for much else...I can see a parade with "My Heart will Go On" literally 'going on' for days....

Emma, I reached that 'there's only so much Celine a person can take' point a long, long time ago.

Then I moved out of Canada and found that non-Canadians love Celine Dion more than Canadians do.

Its funny how everyone becomes a saint once they die.

The one that really stood out for me was Lady Di. The day before her death every magazine was making fun of her bullimia and lack of self esteem. Then the next day those same magazines gave her more love than Mother Teresa.

I never liked her, alive or dead personally.

On the topic of Irwin, I was never fan of the show or the man.
What I was a fan of and still am is his work to save nature and increase education on the animal kingdom.

I've always liked Stevo! I was a big fan cos he was so big and cuddly and he's just so positive about everything. Sometimes all we cynics need a dose of sunshine....

This is the 2nd guy to die after South Park made fun of it. Remember Christopher Reeves just last year?

You're spot on Cibby. It's also funny / disturbing how quick this country is to claim film stars like 'Our Russell', 'Our Cate' and at one time 'Our Mel' (even though no one wants the dude anymore). Funnily enough the first of these stars is a kiwi and the other two are more or less yanks. Steve was well and truly ours but how sad that we weren't so quick to claim him as 'Our Steve' until it was too late.

P.S. This is not to say that our celebs need be anglos or born and bred 'Aussies' (though what does that mean anyway?) - it's just ironic and sad.

Jas - you hit it on the head... part of Aussie/Canadian culture is trying to separate ourselves from the English/Americans, no?

John, great point... Lady Di will always be immortalized as a saint because of the way she died. I have a feeling that the same will happen to Irwin.

Emma, at one point there was such a Celine Dion saturation on TV and the radio that I just couldn't take it anymore. Plus, her restaurant chain has terrible nachos.

Let's face it... all the people who hated him are hardly going to be given airtime to say so.

I remember when Nixon died... you'd think he was the greatest president the US ever had the way everyone was paying tribute to him.

Well, he was an idiot and a bogan, but most people probably think this isn't the time to say so, and so they mention his good points.

Unlike Lady Di, he did actually do stuff while he was alive.

The strange thing is that Steve Irwin is just like a dozen people I grew up with.
When I first saw him I thought that he was a poor mans Paul Hogan and resented the rip-off.
However now I believe he was smarter than he let on. He was able to put in simple words what most would struggle to express.
Sure we all watched to see if one day a croc would get him but secretly no one wanted it to.

You know episode 218 of South Park featuring a parody of Steve Irwin is one of my favorite episodes and now it will hold a deeper meaning of the man who gammed his thumb in a crocks buthole! I am a proud Australian and I liked this episode as it gave the world an idea of Australia and Australians abroad. I have always pulled the piss out of the Crock Hunter and I always will; that’s what’s being an Australian is all about.

He helped promote Australia for what it is, arid and isolated, and by doing so in his own weird way bridged this isolated gap to the rest of the world.

A true hero of Australia. Long live the king of the crocks

Damo, I think you're right. I think he WAS a lot smarter than he let on. I think he understood the need for excitement and sensationalism for people to get enthusiastic about conservation.

When I first saw Irwin back in the '90s, I thought he was a doofus, and overdoing it for the camera a lot. But over time he won me round, with his passion, and his into-it atitude, and always up for a laugh. All qualities we admire here (as most of us are losing the ability to be just like that).

He was a good bloke, and he will be missed.

The staff at the Reptile Park up near Gosford used to have a lot of fun at Steve Irwin's expense which used to bring them in a lot of laughs.
They won't be able to carry on with all of that now, as will a lot of other similar places that I have heard about doing similar things.
A lot of things have now changed for a lot of people and it's a sad thing to have happened to somebody in the prime of his life, not to mention what his wife and 2 young children now have to go through.

Well Im an Aussie who like many thought at first he was putting that overwhelming enthusiasm on but after about the third time I had seen him realised he was for real & from that piont on was proud he was an aussie & a little envious of his enthusiasm for life. Agree with what he did or how he did or not I loved the bloke & wish some days I had a bit more of his passion in myself. I can't explain why & don't totally understand myself but his death has made me feal sad for both myself & my country, more so than I can understand.

Steve was the kewlest man on the planet! I thought so first time I saw him! I am an aussy,
and 4 and half years ago went to his Crocadile Park at Beerwah (I live about 2 and a half hours drive
away in south Brisbane) but I never expected he would be there himself doing the crock show,
it was so KEWL! and watching him on telly, also at interviews he was so great and funny, I dunno
why some idiots say bad things about him (they obviously never knew him or what he did in life,
and or they were jellouse of him, sad pathetic assholes), he was more of a man and a great person
then everyone else in the world, he had a huge passion, a great sene of humour, was your average
guy lived in a normal single story brick home of 3 bedrooms, god I loved his attitude, a wife he loved
dearly along with his kids, its dam well not fair he had to go so early! I been balling my eyes out since
it happened, but I have had some dreams about him, the latest was last night, he was making a great
new park and I was helpging out right along side him, it was so real too! perhaps that is what he is
doing right now

Once, when I had a friend over to visit,he was stroking my dog, held one of my dogs' hairs between his fingers & remarked;"not one person in the world can make a single hair like on this dog".If that's not a profound way of saying nature is wonderful I don't know what is.Steve Irwin obviously understood how wonderful life on Earth is.I have always found it ironic that many people will marvel @ the beauty of a crocodile skin handbag or wallet or boots yet reguard the actual living animal as ugly & disgusting.Steve was always going on about saving wildlife by sharing with people the beauty he saw in all animals.I am sure that his passionate performances with his beloved crocs have convinced a great many people worldwide that a living animal has beauty that far surpases that of any fashion accessory or clothing item.I think the best way to pay respects to a man like this is to live life in a way that has minimal impact on the environment as well as doing positive things like planting trees to feed & shelter the wildlife. One of the things I do for wildlife is to tie my rubbish bags so that the contents don't blow everywhere which can have devastating effects on birds & other fauna. For instance;I have seen a fledgling Soldier Bird hanging by one leg from the edge of its nest. Its foot was caught in a piece of biling twine used in the nests' construction & it couldn't get free.Steves' passing has saddened millions of people around the world.Perhapps this is because he is seen as someone who symbolises all that is good in the world in a time filled with so much horror & ugly bickering. Not least of all,he has touched a great many young school children. If children are our future I now think that the world has a chance because of Steves' influence.

I would like to ask you how many Australians you aksed and spoke to, and actually thought that about the Irwin clan. Those that feel that way about them wouldnt drive for miles to say goodbye. And i think you would be placed in the same catorgory as Germaine Greer.
Just because you met a few that didnt appreciate Steve and all that he stands for, doesnt mean you can view all Australians the same.

Cheers and May happy thoughts return to your head.

I didn't say that ALL Australians had those sentiments - just the ones I've met. My point was that Steve Irwin represented a lot of things about Australia that weren't necessarily true.

I read a very good article about Steve Irwin that pointed out that, really, with his big, loud, passionate persona, he was really more in tune with American national character than your typical laidback, sarcastic, reserved Australian.

I think he was a complete pillock, typical convict with a loud mouth.
I think Penn and Tellers BS doco really got to the nitty gritty about conservation and the environment.

You know, there's a LOT of irony about Steve's death. Besides, I would bet that he never had even heard of a stingray.

But there are other good australians out there. Anyone else know about Paul Kidd?

I recognize the hard work of Steve Hounter Cocordrile, the death is odissey in ocean. I like the people live with life natural this is the example for the future. Steve Riggs remenber you relatiom free is dedication for people need company. You make change the word. Never forget the day your decay in your Australia and your people.
