Star Wars Fans Hate Star Wars

June 25th 2007 05:39
An interesting rant written by Andrey Summers, as he tries to explain to his girlfriend what's so monumental about Star Wars.

It is, in fact, that Star Wars fans hate Star Wars, he claims. And a lot of what he says rings true:

"We hate the way Boba Fett died, and we hate the cantankerous, arthritic duel between Vader and Obi-wan. We don’t understand why the storm-troopers can’t shoot worth a damn, and we don’t get why “an entire legion of [the Emperor’s] best troops”(ROTJ, Palpatine) can be overpowered by a tribal society of midget teddy-bears armed largely with rocks and twigs."

Yeah, those are good points. But you hate the original trilogy more than the prequels? No:

"Jar Jar Binks, Midichlorians, technology that is blatantly more sophisticated than the “later” original trilogy…we despise all of it. There’s nothing a Star Wars fan hates more than a Star Wars prequel. They demystified Boba Fett, contradicted countless lines in the original trilogy (Obi-Wan: “He was our only hope.” Yoda: “No…there is another.” Obi-Wan (not in script): “Oh, right, I f*cking held both of these kids as they were born in Episode 3. Sorry Yoda, I just plumb forgot!”)"

Yeah, they were pretty bad. Hey, I like some of the Star Wars videogames, though.

"Then, naturally, there are the videogames. Star Wars fans hate LucasArts, and the opportunist drivel that comprises most of the gameplay-less apertures known as Star Wars games that they vomit up every fiscal quarter."

I'll add something to this - it's easy to get riled up at the videogames... after all, they just pinch every cinematic moment from the movies, trying to constantly remind you that you're in the Star Wars universe. All the aliens look like aliens from the movies, and hardly any new ideas come out of it. Seriously, I'm getting a little tired of Force Pushes. Got anything else?

The end of the article expresses it all the best, though:

"Maybe I’ll put it like this. To be a Star Wars fan, one must possess the ability to see a million different failures and downfalls, and then somehow assemble them into a greater picture of perfection. Every true Star Wars fan is a Luke Skywalker, looking at his twisted, evil father, and somehow seeing good.

My earlier statement needs slight revision. We hate everything about Star Wars.

But the idea of Star Wars…the idea we love."

I love that. I just realised it's very true when I was about to write that I LOVE star wars and I don't criticise anything about it. Well except for the fact that Return of the Jedi was a bloody muppet movie, and I hated Jar Jar Binks, and the effects in the prequel were just too high tech. And how bad was the love story between Padme and Anakin.....

Okay, so the dude might have a point. hehehehe. Still the best god damn trilogy ever though (the original movies).

PS.
Did you hear that Lucas is doing a new documentary called "Stormtroopers"? Link Don't know if it could ever be as good as "Trekkies" Link

Fun article,
There are certainly imperfections in the sectology. I like the whole incest angle.

In defence of what he claims, Obi wan (Alec Guiness) was never shocked to find out Luke had a sister, he was just bugged Vader had told the moppet. (Damn uncontrollable geek outburst)

Fun post, Cibb. The "new" trilogy may possibly be the greatest waste of time ever caught on film. I hated every second of each of the new movies. And not in the fun "oh, that was sorta dumb" way. No, I deeply regret the 7 hours of my life lost to watching the adventures of teen Darth Vader.

As for the "original" trilogy? It's got more holes than swiss cheese, and suspension of disbelief doesn't even begin to explain what the viewer has to do to accept all the gaffes, but somehow they're still great. I'm even OK with the damned ewoks, although I think the appearance of those glorified teddy bears marked the first sign that Lucas was out of his mind.....

"Every true Star Wars fan is a Luke Skywalker, looking at his twisted, evil father, and somehow seeing good"

That was very insightful. I still bawl my eyes out when Vader comes through for Luke at the very last minute and pitches Palpatine down the tube..

I can see that this post hit a nerve... yeah, Star Wars is something that people love to get passionate about, one way or the other.

One good thing about the prequels: it brought Star Wars back into the mainstream... otherwise, it'd just be lumped in with that other space-thing, Star Trek.

Yep, I'm a softie. But don't tell anybody or I'll kill you..

I dunno, Cibby. I've tried to see this as objectively as possible. Allowed for human nature and dislike of change, et. al..

..but I still think the older ones are far superior to the prequels. The characters were a lot easier to like..even those goofy-looking midget bears.

Nope. Disagree. It is actually going that way very quickly, with TV shows and massive conventions... it's actually more like Star Trek than ever before.

Give it another few years and people will be speaking Jawa or Hutt-ese...

Yep, I'm a softie. But don't tell anybody or I'll kill you..

Ha!

yoda, yeah, maybe you're right. I feel that Star Wars has got a little bit of mainstream appeal, because of all the TV shows, video games and comic books. Plus the prequels, which had these known actors, giving it a rep boost.

Like my ID suggests, I'm a real big SW fan (DOH!). However I do not get into the 'logical' side of things. I take the whole SW phenomenon as what it is: Entertainment.

SW it is after all a man's vision, which he tried to put into a form he can share with the masses.

I can not even imagine what's it like to write something like that, trying to tie everything together, and then go and tell other people (storyboard illustrator, model & prop builders, producers, directors, actors/actresses, and all the other myriad of people needed to make a movie) how you want it done.

Then you have the physical, logistic and technological obstacles, and I can not even begin to imagine how huge those challenges are.

I used to manage events for a living; and even a smallish event like a road show over 2 weekends need to be planned out months in advance, and things change like every other minute. More often then not the final outcome is very different from what's in the brief the client gave us. We sometimes had to literally fight with the client to change certain things, because it just can't be done the way the client want it, if the show were to go on. I bet this happens a lot when making a movie.

Ok so in the middle of all the madness of making the movies the man may have made a few mistakes and probable accepted some not-so-favorable suggestions, or agreed to some not-so-popular advice. Its easy to say after the fact "he could have done it different, and better'; but when you're in the thick of things and a million things are happening, and decisions needed to be made in a split second, its not so easy to see the effect that decision will have on the final outcome. While I don't necessary agree with some of the end results, I can understand, and live with them.

People think too much. Treat it as the great entertainment package it's intended to be. Have a good time with it, and move along, move along.

Good words, SWgeek... it's all entertainment, though it's quite a universe to be entertained in...
