Spoof movies are the lowest of the low

February 5th 2008 21:37
They're easy to watch, and they've been around for a long time: the spoof movie, a genre revisited in a flurry of popularity before audiences grow weary of them.

Andrew Pulver in the Guardian Film Blog criticized the low-aiming spoof movies that seem to pop up out of nowhere. The article was motivated by the success of "Meet the Spartans", a spoof of "300" and pop-culture references, pulling in over $18 million on its opening weekend.

Pulver is also dismayed to learn that there'll be a fifth installment in the "Scary Movie" series, a movie that goes for all the obvious targets in spoofing the horror genre:

"It's a truism to say that the spoof is the lowest form of the cinematic art. These films are essentially parasitic, recycling ideas from other movies that, when they first emerged, may have seemed clever or frightening or funny - but, when run into the ground by lesser talents, have merely become stupid. I know this because, for reasons I don't want to go into, I had to sit through all four Scary Movie...

...Scary Movie itself had no such claims to smart-arse acuity, being simply a ragbag of lame jokes and low-rent cameos, recycled from the still-warm corpse of a much cleverer movie, only four years old. But here's the thing: Scary Movie made lots and lots of money - almost half as much again ($150m) as Scream. So, as a spoof of a spoof, Scary Movie may be the most pathetically reductive film in the history of cinema; but you can't argue with the figures. People loved it, damn them."

Still, I grew up watching "The Naked Gun" and Mel Brooks films, loving them for their machine-gun rate of jokes. If you didn't laugh at one, there'd be another one coming up soon. Brooks' movies were fantastic to watch as a kid... I didn't really 'get' the references, but there were puns and slapstick, forms of comedy that I could really sink my teeth into.

I couldn't sit through one now, though... parody movies such as "Scary Movie" and its spinoffs, "Epic Movie" and "Date Movie" use the simplest form of comedy writing to make people laugh, and that should be reviled.

Looking at the following still from "Meet the Spartans", you can pretty much write the rest of the script in your head:

Meet the Spartans deal or no deal
I found it on I Watch Stuff, and they said this:

"Ha ha! Oh gosh! It's just like that "Deal" show, ha ha--I'm sorry, I can't stop laughing--except it's Spartans playing it! Spartans playing Deal or No Deal!Ha ha! This movie looks hilarious, how it sort of recreates something from recent pop culture memory, except in a slightly altered way! Classic! I hope they also mention Paris Hilton or, like, farts! I know those things!"

Agreed Cib,

We are a long way from Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and Flying High now.

It is funny how modern parody film seems to have a get out of jail free card that rewards the least effort. Where there used to be wit there is now only the most obvious, predictable jokes.

Cib

I'm with you on this.

I grew up with Flying High and Naked Gun to boot.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) the words barge pole and parody's seem to go together for me these days.

Cheers

JohnDoe, I've only ever seen Scary Movie, which was so bland and obvious that it never made me want to watch any of the others. The trailer for "Meet the Spartans" makes it look much worse.

MNG, how about Airplane!? I saw that when I was a teenager and it made me laugh from the sheer effort.

Spoofing a genre can work--Shaun of the Dead is a great example, but spoofing a movie just tries to catch a wave before it collapses. Does anyone believe that Meet the Spartans has any reason for existence other than the quick buck?

sylvie, I think we're on the same page, but with different semantics. "Shaun of the Dead" - a terrific movie - is not a spoof/parody movie in my book... it's an homage to the zombie genre. It has its own story, its own style, and most importantly, its own sense of humour.

The homage is an important tradition in cinema and one, if done right, adds to the genre, rather than sucking cash off it.

Ah- thanks JD, I was thinking that I had to look it up... Actually, Flying High is probably a better name...

Thanks for clearing that one up JD - apologies Cib - good to see we continue to bridge the the cultural and language barriers (ie: cookies vs biscuits vs scones vs biscuits vs Airplane vs Flying High).

Cheers

Cibb, I think quality spoof movies died in the late 80s or early 90s. To me, modern spoof movies don't have that tongue-in-cheek wit to them and are more slapstick - maybe this has something to do with the quality of the blockbuster movies they're spoofing?

It requires real talent and wit to to make a clever spoof.

Such people are very rare these days.

Yet the spoofs are plentiful.

Yep, you're bang on. Flying High, The Naked Gun, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Austen Powers and Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood are about it for me.

Cannot stand Not Another Teen Movie, Scary Movie, etc. They try to make a mockery of bad movies and just end up making a mockery of themselves.

Meet the Spartans looks like a damn terrible movie and it shocked me to see how much it pulled in at the box office. I really hate all of those (Insert Genre) Movie but the first scary movie, I didn't mind that one. Everything after that was terrible.

I totally agree with the well thought out spoofs like Naked Gun and Austin Powers. I loved Space Balls as well. I hate how jokes in today's spoofs aren't funny yet they are watered down and repeated throughout the whole movie. In the end we all walk out frustrated with the urge to murder someone extremely high. Well... at least I did I dunno about all of you guys

We actually went to the city of Nottingham in the UK recently and at one of the Robin Hood type places they were actually playing Men In Tights in full screen on the wall at the cafe area. And I have to add that most of the adults were watching it.

Michaelie, I forgot about Don't be a Menace... that made me laugh, though some of the jokes are awful...

Wayne, I haven't seen anything except Scary Movie, which was a parody of a parody. Have you seen the others? Yeah, I was shocked how much they pulled in...

However, in 20 years, maybe these (insert genre) Movie movies will be fondly remembered, like we remember Airplane!, Spaceballs and Blazing Saddles?

Melissa, I've actually never seen Men in Tights...

I don't mind a spoof movie. My all-time favourite is probably Space Balls. That was funny! And I did have a soft spot for the Naked Gun movies (well the first 2). I also did like the Hot Shots movies. Though that probably had more to do with Charlie Sheen being in it than because it was particularly good......although I did see it at the movies.

Hey Cibb I've seen all the Scary Movies and its safe to say they became pretty bad after 1. Number 2 stuck to horror movies but 3 and 4 started to squeeze in pretty much every movies that was popular for that year.

Epic Movie was a complete mess as my friends have told me so I am going to be giving it a review on my website. Date Movie was only funny due to the Michael Jackson reference and that was only funny as my friends love to bag him.

The main problem with these movies is how they rely heavily, very heavily, on a lot of toilet humor and sexual jokes which aren't funny in the first place.

You know, when my eye caught the word "spoof" in the title of this post, I realised I had a dirty mind. Must absolutely agree on that genre -- it's egregious.

i totally agree that movies like scary, epic and date movie are making way too much money, while at the same time are wasting peoples time.

thogh these spoof movies do seem to suck, i think everyone loves movies like "Space Balls", and even the new move "Shaun of the Dead" do a great job of contrasting the origionals in unique ways.
