Spanish Film Festival 2006
May 2nd 2006 02:21
I commented before that I wasn't looking forward to this year's blockbuster movies, which looks like a load of half-cooked tripe covered in flies.
If you have the grand fortune to be living in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne, though, you've got great options. Last month, the German Film Festival brought an interesting mix of German films, and May showcases Latin films with the Spanish Film Festival.
From May 3-15, at the Palace Cinema (99 Norton st, Leichhardt), the Spanish Film Festival will screen an unbelievable range of Spanish films, from Spain and Latin America.
Ok, ok. In previous posts, I've harped on about sex-related topics.
I'm not going to do that, this time.
No.
It's not easy, though. Latin films are notoriously passionate, with themes of awakened sexuality and liberty. The website for the festival has some alluring pictures, and the descriptions of the films sound pretty steamy.
I'm not saying anything. Nothing about sex.
There's such variety at this festival, with photo exhibitions and documentaries - it's hard to keep track of it all. Luckily, the website is fabulously designed, making it easy -and fun!- to look through what's on.
I recommend: Princesses, a film scored by the tragically playful Manu Chao...
and
Swindled, a crime-thriller featuring the show-stopping Victoria Abril as a 'slippery femme fatale'...
and
Heartlift, a film from Argentina-Spain that sounds tantalizingly... well... shhh... sexy.
Espaniola!

I'd love to see these spanish flicks, but will I get around to it? I dunno... it's all the way in leichhardt, and I'm sooooo lazy....

I'm voting with Sisi - Newtown's the go. Even if you're a radical liberal cultural multicoloured tree-hugging tofu-eating uni student but you don't have to like buses!
Even for the great Manu Chao.

Yeah, Dendy's in Newtown would be a lot better... actually, it'd be fitting if it played in the Spanish Quarter in the CBD, but there aren't available theatres there, maybe.
It might be worth it to take a trip out to Leichhardt. Catch a flick and eat an italian dinner at one of Ed's recommended places...
