Sci Fi fans rejoice: screenwriters developing script for Blade Runner 2!

September 29th 2008 23:01
Blade Runner Harrison Ford holding gun

If there was ever a movie that begged for a sequel, it was "Blade Runner", Ridley Scott's 1982 film about a detective hunting down replicants . The beloved sci fi flick has only improved with age, garnering cult status among science fiction fans.

According to Wikipedia, Ridley Scott has toyed with the idea of a sequel and may be interested in pushing the project forward.

Now, /Film has heard news that the "Eagle Eye" screenwriters are working on a script for a sequel to "Blade Runner":

"“I recently attended a Q&A session with one of the writers of ‘Eagle Eye’ after a free screening organized by the magazine Creative Screenwriting. During the Q&A, the writer said that he and whomever it was that helped him co-write the ‘Eagle Eye’ screenplay were in the process of writing a sequel to Blade Runner, and had already contacted the producers of the original, etc., etc."

/Film states that the studios have not acknowledged that the project will go ahead, knowing full well that there'd be a swarm of ferocious crop-eating nerds descending into Hollywood, devouring all the lobster salads and taking up all the parking.

I can't wait, though. Imagine the merchandising tie-in: finally, I'll be able to go to Taco Bell and get myself a Burritos Replicante or a Tex-Deckard Nacho Salad, accompanied by a super-size cola in a collectible cup.

Wait with fear and trepidation.

Will it live up to the master or be like 2010? Quaint but not brilliant.

Or will it be a 'Ghost in the Shell 2?' Brilliant but over the heads of most of the audience?

Biting nails to find out.

Damo, I knew you'd leap at this story.

Personally, I can only imagine that it would be a disappointment. Scott has lost his shine over the years. They'll probably include some gratuitous action scenes, maybe some wire-fu and a zany sidekick.

very bad idea - yes the original was great - but there's no room for more to this story - the moment passed long ago - think up something new Ridley - for the sake of good taste if nothing else!!

I'm very distressed.
I don't think a sequel is a good idea at all.
It will only mar the mystique and integrity of the original.
Just like a sequel to The Thing would/will do exactly the same thing.
I'm not looking forward to this at all.
Blade Runner is my favourite film.

Cib,

Oh be still my beating heart .. a sequel to perhaps one of sci~fis best?

Will they consider using Harrison Ford again, do you think?

Oh I have to echo Damo and Bryn, my nerves have begun to fray just thinking about it, but my sense of adventure implores me forward to wanting to find out ... the truth ... of where this could go to do it justice... either way, the original will never be marred in my mind as it stands for all time as a clear jewel of uneqauled perfection ..

Something to look forward to?

Lilla ...

Perhaps the script will be lost like tears in rain.

Time to die.

The main reasons why I think it's a bad idea is Ridley Scott told the whole story; there is no more to tell. If you want to make a sequel you have to have a story - the integrity of the original has always stuck because it was a full circle and then after the Directors Cut - well it left the question more stylishly - that we, none of us, know when we're going to die...

And there was the suggestion that Deckard is also a replicant - and so he and his replicant girl go off into the unknown...

If you want to make a sequel - maybe it needs to be set well after all of that and just play with the idea of some new threat in that society - but again, the sets, the lighting, the effects - they were all state of the art (tricks) used in advertising at the time - and were fresh on the big screen - now they'd look a bit like 'old school' new wave sci-fi. There's nothing wrong with that - until the producers save money by using CGI and recycling an old Hero story just to hang the title off of...

It would be such a shame - just like Aliens has been taken beyond any reasonable end point, by deliberately throwing the Predator/Aliens franchises together - although they stray so far from Alien Eart Wars (the comic) it's sad..

Just because something is great it doesn't mean it needs a sequel...

The Sting 2
Beyond the Poseidon Adventure
Star Wars
Scarlett (Gone With The Wind 2)
Search for the son of the brother of the friend of the Pink Panther etc..

Considering how lame the sequel novel was and the fact that the original films ambiguity is its strength this idea REPULSES me.

Ridley has lost it i think, between this and the fact that he has cast Russel Crowe as both Robin Hood and the evil sherrif in the film Nottingham, lets just hope neither get a cinema release....wheres that Alien, Duellists originality I used to love?

lots of angry voices...

David, I get the feeling that Ridley wants to revisit his glory years, hence all the directors cuts that have come out...

Bryn, I haven't seen Blade Runner in a long time, but it definitely doesn't feel like it should be tarnished with a sequel...

Lilla, perhaps they'll use Shia LaBoeuf as the 'son of Deckard'?

Jarrah, I guess the accountants think it's a fantastic idea. It'll probably make a heap of money, no matter how unfaithful it is...

JD, I think Ridley has lost it, too. Why can't he just enjoy his contribution to cinema?

TimmyH, wicked, indeed.

Cibby, I was so distressed I didn't even register your tongue in cheek ... sorry for being so uptight.

The major problem I'd have with any sequel is that it would probably look far too shiny - like most modern sci-fi does. The original has a gritty quality that would be hard to recapture effectively with these vast advancements in technology.

I'm looking forward to it with anticipation and fear at the same time. If it will be good, then hurray, if bad, then hopefully I can ignore it as something unrelated to the sci-fi classic.

Bryn, yeah, I was being sarcastic - I would have thought that this was the giveaway:

finally, I'll be able to go to Taco Bell and get myself a Burritos Replicante or a Tex-Deckard Nacho Salad, accompanied by a super-size cola in a collectible cup.

Daniel, I agree. Or, if they choose to make it 'gritty', they'll do it in post with digitized grit. That look bothers me, too.

Bob, it'll be hard to ignore, I bet. The hype on a BR sequel would be massive...

Ooh excellent suggestion, maybe start with a cameo by Ford?

From some future beyond where the original story took place .. of how it worked okay for a while, but now there is trouble in paradise again, calling LaBoeuf in from another life making him the perfect reluctant hero; perhaps even using *cringe* flashbacks ot him remembering his fathers [Fords] words and expereince from the days of the original .. *chuckle* maybe new age replicants CAn transform ~ why not?

Perhaps more replicants existed (in secret) than we knew about it the original *puke* (you know adopt the cop out (easy premise) to spring from ?).

Gosh, the possibilities are endless here aren't they?

I've recently rekindled my love for BR, after having only watched it at the cinema when I was a wee lad.

I still haven't re-watched it, but instead relied on the 'feeling' I have in my mind of how BR is, and should be, to fuel my passion. Through collecting props both seen and unseen in the movie, I have come to understand and love the movie on a totally different level. The LA of 2019 created by Ridley Scott for the movie is truly stunning, with elements from so many cultures and sources it is mind boggling. This was only possible due to a lack of CGI, as the prop masters need to find real world items which look like they fit into the BR world, and not just make stuff up digitally.

That, in my opinion, is what made BR what it is. And that, is what will surely make any new BR movie not up to the mark, exactly like how SW OT feels very real and believable while SW PT feels very superficial and fake.

I leave you with a photo of some BR stuff which belong to a fellow collector. Some replica, some real world stuff. Most people who watched BR even for multiple times won't know most of the items in that photo were used in the movie, but they ARE there.

It will happen, I'm quite sure of it. I'm also fairly certain it will be total trash. It seems to be the law, or something. Potential big $ skewed-vision adaptation/sequel = destruction of all that is holy.
