Russell Crowe wants to be Guy Ritchie's Dr. Watson
September 1st 2008 23:36
In old news, Guy Ritchie has been attached to direct a Sherlock Holmes movie that upgrades Holmes to a more rousing version of the neurotic detective, giving him the new-James-Bond upgrade, focusing, I imagine, on his boxing and cocaine sniffing.
In a rather bland article from ABC.net.au:
I've always been a fan of the detective stories penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, having read them when I was young, in a young reader's version, then again when I was older. Some of the stories were fascinating, others, terrifying.
They've been adapted to the screen numerous times, and it was only a matter of time before someone decided to remake the adaptation, with more percussion and explosions.
Guy Ritchie seems like a natural choice, though I worry that he'll bring Russian jewel thieves and Irish bare-fist boxers into the film.
Today, a slinky rumour surfaced from that venerable source of journalistic integrity, the UK Sun; the rumour is that Russell Crowe is likely to play Dr. Watson, Holmes' perplexed companion.
At least the Sun is a little more colourful in their choice of language, though hardly any facts are needed for them to post this article, along with a poorly-done rendering of what Russell Crowe might look like in the film.
I found this story on /Film, which reminds us to take this news with a bottle of VB:
In case you didn't know, the Sun combines rumours and half-baked news with naked ladies(NSFW) and stories about men that had sex with 400 cows.
I don't have much hope for this Guy Ritchie adaptation... in my mind, Holmes was the ancestor to the geek/hacker, scorned by his fellow man, frothing with contempt at society, but obsessed with solving problems.
In a rather bland article from ABC.net.au:
"The crime caper specialist has signed on to rewrite and direct a project that will reimagine the super sleuth as more adventuresome and less stuffy than previous screen incarnations."

"He was due to play the Sheriff of Nottingham in a retelling of the Robin Hood story but that has been put on the back burner and now he’s going to be Dr Watson in GUY RITCHIE’s Sherlock Holmes movie. "

"Again, let me remind you that The Sun doesn’t exactly have a great track record when it comes to the rumor department. But every once in a while they get something juicy."

Sasch Baron Cohen will star in a humourous Holmes movie... I don't know what I think of that, though when John Cleese did it, it was delightful, I thought.

I just hope that the rumours of Crowe playing Bill Hicks are false.
As for Holmes comedy I can't go past Without a Clue starring Ben Kingsley as Watson and Michael Caine as Holmes.
As Director of this new Holmes I think Shaun Medows (Dead Man's Shoes) would be an interesting choice.

Hey, Shaun Meadows might be a good choice... how about Edgar Wright?

Ridiculous! Russell Crowe as Dr. Watson (a sidekick.... the horror!) just don't see it! I had not heard that rumor. Thanks for the heads up!
