Rumour of a Wachowski Bros' adaptation of Plastic Man?
July 15th 2008 21:53
In all my comic book days, there was no character more delightfully irritating than Plastic Man, a former thief that gains the ability to shape himself into any object he desires, like a piece of molded plastic.
It seems like a simple power, not too much of a stretch by comic book standards, but it began to dawn on people that Plastic Man was actually one of the most powerful characters created, and the writers made each comic full of slapstick and surreal humour. Most of the storylines in Plastic Man books would be him making a few criminals break down in a hallucinogenic stupor from the shifting reality of this ridiculous superhero.
Frank Miller, in his knockout series, "Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again", nails the essence of the character. "He's the most powerful of us all, and he's completely insane."
Somehow, the Wachowski Bros, creators of "The Matrix" and its insufferable sequels, penned a script for an adaptation... there's a rumour on /Film about a movie coming our way, but it seems too much like tendrils of thick fog. From the site:
"...that Keanu Reeves will be playing Eels O’Brien (the real name of Plastic Man). Apparently this is the start of a new love period between Reeves and the Wachowskis... the brothers want to work with him on all their future projects.”"
Keanu Reeves as Plastic Man? I can't see it, I really can't. This is the lead of "The Matrix", whose grand contribution was to utter 'Woah' and 'There is no spoon'? If anyone should be cast as Plastic Man, it'd have to be someone rubbery and manic, like Jim Carrey in "The Mask" or Charlie Chaplin back in "Modern Times".
Who could pull it off?

Anyway, I just wish the Wachowski brothers would stop making films, full stop. The Matrix sequels have tainted them forever I think. Only Bound is any good (other than The Matrix) - in fact it's very good!
