Roman Polanski and Nastassja Kinski

May 29th 2008 22:38
Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate

Roman Polanski was a colourful character in cinema, having created two fantastic films in Hollywood, "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby", as well as an entire catalogue of well-received films in Europe and America.

He might be remembered best, though, as the widowed husband of Sharon Tate, the actress that was murdered by the infamous Manson Family.

No, wait... actually, Polanski is probably best known for the fact that he plead guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1978, and is considered a fugitive from the United States.

Polanski certainly liked young girls... reader Sugar Hush sent in a link about movie controversies which reminds us that Polanski actually dated Nastassja Kinski, who was 15 at the time.

"If found guilty Roman Polanski would face a 50-year prison sentence in 1977, and he eventually filmed the British novel in France to avoid being extradited for prosecution. It became one of Hollywood’s most famous controversies, darkly overshadowing the movie to this day. (Wikipedia claims Polanski had previously had an affair with the movie’s star, Nastassja Kinski, when she was 15, and IMDB quotes her as saying that “As a director, he was 10 times more wonderful than as a lover.”)"

Hmmm... given the critical success of Chinatown, Polanski must have been dynamite in bed...

I tried not to think about him as I watched Nastassja Kinski in the remake of Cat People!

Cibby, actually he didn't plead guilty, he fled America rather than plead guilty ... The woman, now in her 40s, as been quoted as saying the legal system should let it go, and allow the man back in the country. In Polanski's brilliant autobiography Roman by Polanski he describes the girl as looking and acting like she was 18 or so, and that she lied to him about her age ... essentially explaining that he'd been duped.
Cat People is a great movie, very, very different from the brilliant original, but sensational just the same. I remember seeing it when I was still an adolescent, and it's adult themes were very potent. Directed by Scorsese regular Paul Schrader.
As for Nastassja, check her out in To The Devil a Daughter with Christopher Lee. Ms. Kinski wasn't shy about her nudity at age as a teenager!!

bryn, thanks for the filling in. What happened to Kinski? She seemed to have faded from the public eye...

Hi Cib,

When you get past Nastassja (not easy), Cat People is memorable for the Bowie soundtrack and Malcolm McDowell. I thought McDowell was going to be one of the greats (early in his career) after If, Clockwork Orange and O Lucky Man. Pity to see his career decline so much.

Hey, can you find out for me what (if anything?) has happened to Mark Joffe? Nothing since 2001 (The Man Who Sued God). I worked with him when he was a student working over Summer breaks. I was actually going to write about him myself as he was very keen on horse racing (award for directing The Great Bookie Robbery) and we often met at the races. Went different ways, then one night I'm watching the Movie Show and up pops Mark and the wonderful Spotswood. Didn't he have a great eye for emerging acting talent! Seven years seems a long time between movies.

Cibby,
I seem to remember she married a wealthy Egyptian business man ten or fifteen years ago, and eased herself out of the movie industry.

Leonard, actually the brilliant Cat People soundtrack is by Georgio Morodor. David Bowie only co-wrote the title theme track.
