Peter Jackson confirmed to direct The Hobbit
December 18th 2007 22:32
Movie fans around the world let out a simultaneous sigh of contentment today... New Line Cinemas announced that Peter Jackson, director of the hugely-successful and critically acclaimed The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, would be producing The Hobbit.
Before The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, a quasi-prequel set in Middle Earth, focusing on Bilbo Baggins finding the One Ring.
I read The Hobbit as a kid... it's a book that appeals to children, with that daft silliness and uplifting courage that makes great adventures. Tolkien would get ten degrees darker with the Lord of the Rings, but here he dances in the moonlight. It's a wonderful story, with great characters and a fantastic 'road trip' type scenario.
The reason that fans are so damn excited about this news is that New Line Cinema publicly stated that Jackson would never make The Hobbit, after Jackson sued the studio for more royalties.
A little shard broke off every fanboy's heart after that announcement... most people were certain that the Hobbit movie would lack the geek-love, and end up being a dismal Hollywood adaptation.
Jackson's idea for the project is to split the movie into two movies... it sounds like a money-grubbing plan, but I've got admiration for the big guy. It's a dense book, and splitting it into two will ensure that the screenplay won't be rushed, and there'll be enough time to develop the huge cast of characters.
I think it's safe to say that we're all looking forward to this!
Here's a treat: the first 10 minutes of The Hobbit cartoon, made in 1977. Personally, I think Jackson used the visual style of this cartoon to guide him in the look of the Lord of the Rings movies... look at the Hobbit-hole and the wizards!

Have to admit wasn't a big fan of Trilogy (more to do with my taste than the trilogy itself I suspect) - but can't wait for the Hobbit release.
ahhhh - yep collective sigh.

I've always had a soft spot for the Hobbit... I like it better than the other books. We'll see how well Jackson replicates the atmosphere...

Jackson will do it justice, as he did the Trilogy.
As for referencing the animation in the films, well...
Tolkien is VERY descriptive when he writes (probably to a fault), but this representation of the hobbit-hole is pretty faithful to the book, and just how I pictured it when reading, and probably much the same as Jackson would have seen reading it.
It's probably just faithful t the original material, more than anything
I am just sorry to hear he won't be directing, as your title suggested.

As for directors, people are talking Sam Raimi, but someone on the Guardian suggested Guillermo Del Toro, which I thought might be fantastic. Imagine the spiders and the sneaky elves, done with his creepy touch?

Given Jackson's earlier films, I think he was ideal for the darker tone of LOTR. If he directed, it may end up that way, which thinking about it now is probably not where it would need to go...
Sam Raimi... that could work?
I found Tolkien over-descriptive in parts. He tends to go on tagents, but it's worse in LOTR. He would digress into some elaborate description of something, and ten pages later come back to something... I was like "Oh yeah... that's what we were talking about!!"
