I can't wait to see Lust, Caution (色·戒)
September 2nd 2007 23:39
Man, I haven't been this eager for a film since Hot Fuzz.
I'm a big fan of Chinese cinema, though I'm not terribly well-experienced with it, and though Ang Lee's last few movies have been pandering to Oscar audiences, his latest looks like a ferocious melange of art and passion.
Here's the trailer for the film:
Lust, Caution (色·戒
stars Tony Leung and Joan Chen, and has already been slapped with a NC-17 rating.
The Guardian film blog is predicting that this film will be the first to be hit with a NC-17 rating in the States, but still pack theatres and win awards. Let's hope so.
I've been predicting that Chinese filmmakers would eventually cross the no-no boundary into sex and lust... it looks like Ang Lee took the first step. Officially, movies with nudity or graphic sex are illegal in China, though the black market trade is rife with more pornography than you could ever watch.
Aside: for example, on an average day in the markets, some DVD vendor, usually an old Chinese grandmother, would tap me on the shoulder and make the vigourous finger-through-a-hole motion, then smile and raise her hands in embarrassment. She tried to sell me porn, and not just a little porn. A whole stack of it. 30 hours of it, 15 DVD in total. Cost = $15.
It'll be interesting to see if Lust, Caution will come out in China... the language of the film is Mandarin, which means that Chinese students studying abroad are likely to see it and appreciate it before anyone else.
The film has already won accolades at the premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
I'm very, very excited to see this. Hot steamy Shanghai nights!

JD, I liked Pushing Hands, actually. I'm not a big fan of the Tiger, Dragon movie.
Nick, you'll love this, then!

And BTW, nudity in film is allowed in Taiwan, but not in China. So thanks God we can see the complete version of this movie.

The movie opened in Hong Kong last week, saw it and loving it. Another masterpiece addition to Ang Lee's movies. As usual, a lot of witty bits in the dialogue and body language, I am sure I can pick up something new when I see it the second time.
The spoken languages switched seamlessly among Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Shanghainese, the movie portraits a very interesting time/space of Shanghai and Hong Kong in the late 30's and early 40's.
I was told that around 7 minutes footage of the love scenes being censored when shown in PRC.
Finally, I wouldl like to know when this movie will start showing in Australia, I recommend this movie wholeheartedly to my friends in Australia.

I'm not sure when this will be released in Australia... unfortunately, international movies are slow to be released here. I'm very excited to see it, though!

P.S. Hot Fuzz was one of the funniest movies I have seen for a long time. Have you also seen Shawn of the Dead?
P.P.S. Just saw Stardust, Robert de Niro and Michelle Pheiffer are great, there is also a very good cast of Britsh commedians in it.

I loved Hot Fuzz, and was lucky to see it and Stardust at a press showing. Shaun of the Dead is fantastic, of course. Have you seen Spaced?
Thanks for reading!
