Reviews, previews and chuckling and snorting...

London to Brighton showing at the Chauvel Cinema

April 3rd 2008 22:35
London to Brighton
A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed the high-adrenaline British crime thriller, "London to Brighton", a wickedly frenetic low budget movie that was called the "best British movie of the year" by Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian.

I also managed to talk over the phone with the director, Paul Andrew Williams, about the movie, which is being released by Siren Visual on DVD here in Australia.

A few of the readers here were interested in seeing the movie and, fortunately, Siren Visual will be organizing a one-off screening of the film at the Chauvel Cinema.

It'll be playing at 6:45 on Wednesday Thursday, April 10 at the Chauvel Cinema. Tickets are just $13/$10 for this event.

I'll definitely try to make it and even bring a few friends of mine along. If you like gritty, passionate filmmaking, this is definitely something you'll want to see. The subject matter is tough and uncomprimising, but Williams finds moments of tranquil peace in the English countryside.

A little more convincing? Check out the trailer:

This looks amazing. When the Brits get it right they really do get it right.

I think I'll have to steel myself for the DVD.

Jayne - do yourself a favour and come down to the Chauvel to see it.

Or pre-order it on Siren Visual.

This looks harrowing, like a knife to the throat. Definitely want to see this one. Cib 10 April is not a Wednesday, but a Thursday - so can you confirm if it's showing on the 9th (Wed) or 10th (Thurs).
Thanks
Jo

Jo - thanks for the correction.

It's showing on April 10, Thursday.

and, Jo, I think you'll love this... it's elevated above other crime films by a current of sincere emotion. Read my review for more on it.

Hey Cib,
I'm in Newcastle and we don't get much good stuff here any more - now that our Regal Cinema is closed!
Will definitely go the DVD option.

Jayne, ah well... the DVD is being released next week, but you can preorder it for $30.

Too bad about your cinema!

Cool!
Our cinema was great - I saw A Clockwork Orange there for the first time when I was just a pup. Some OHS bureaucratic debacle saw its death I think.

Damn, I can't do Thursday, was hoping you'd mistaken it for Wednesday night. Thursday night is Tai Chi... I will have to get this on dvd. Thanks Cib, this one is definitely up my alley - read your great review, and it goes right into the guts of all the dark things I am interested in (and am also a little frightened of). And in British hands... spells a must-see.

jayne - I had the pleasure of rewatching a Clockwork Orange at the Chauvel last year. While flawed, it's still a stylish piece of work with terrific scenes.

Joanne, that's a shame. Well, try to see it on DVD. It's a difficult watch at times, due to the horrific subject matter...

That's brave film-making. I've just been asked to do a cover-shout for a book about a prostitute who fall s pregnant, is raped... - I've just finished it, and it was harrowing. I think if taboos are handled with sophistication and artistry, they have the power and potential to change us - I guess that (other than just unbridled expedience and exploitation of a topic) is the aim of this kind of art. And you just feel like cheering when someone pulls it off.

joanne, absolutely... censors and media-watching group love to heap criticism on movies for being too violent or too sexual, but, really, it should be evaluated how those issues are dealt with.
