Seinfeld's Michael Richards has a racist outburst

November 20th 2006 22:16
Kramer tells you to stop
The guy we all loved to watch as Kramer on Seinfeld is washed-up and striking back in anger, it would appear.

Michael Richards, once a prime time darling, is now doing stand-up on small comedy stages - when someone interrupts him, he screams racist names until the audience starts leaving.

It's ugly. It's bleak. He's probably passed out right now with a bag of cocaine in his right hand, a soiled issue of Swank in his left.

It's sad to see. I thought you were hilarious, Mr. Richards, but the downward spiral of forgotten fame has lead you to infamy.

Update:

Michael Richards appeared, via teleconference, on Letterman, by the request of Jerry Seinfeld. He makes his apologies, and seems sincere, though he does use the term 'Afro-Americans'.

Seinfeld pulls it through with grace, though, doing his bit, making Kramer seem like Kramer again.

I watched that with the sound turned off, so thank god for the subtitles. Shocking stuff!

He's completely lost the plot which is a shame, cos he was bloody hilarious on Seinfeld.

I'm guessing he's doing stand-up for fun these days? I wouldn't think he'd need the dough given the insane amounts of money he was paid per episode during the latter seasons of Seinfeld?

I guess he's a stand up comedian, so he must enjoy doing it. He definitely looked frazzled that day.

Some comedians are brilliant at deflecting hecklers. It's part of the job after all.

Maybe he's spent lal the seinfield money he's made.

Heck, throw a 'charming' celebrity in the world of regular people and then you'll see just how charming they are.

Rascist bastard, hope he dies in a gutter somewhere.

Bet the other ex-stars of seinfield are going to show up and show support for him, yadayadayada, all in the name of popularity. Curse them all.

Ok, enough not-so-drunken ramblings...

Well it is a comedians job to to interact with the audience, and what he said while cheap could have ended there, but not go on and on the way it did, rascist drive probably...

Jerry Seinfeld has spoken out, but has stopped short of defending Richards...

Welll a heartfelt apology and some random charity should get him back on track. Thogh I wouldn't buy the apology, much less anything else from him.

He really is washed up...

you're right - he did not make a public apology, and I expect that he won't.

First Mel Gibson, now Kramer's racist for gosh sake.

I wonder if Michael harboured anti-semitism while working with the jewish Jerry Seinfeld.

November 21st 2006 01:56
I don't hate Mel as much as Kramer, since Mel was drunk, and he did apologise, but still doesn't excuse him, and does show his darker (probably more-true) side.

i think he is jewish. however, i love seinfeld and still watch it at an obsessive level but i'd look at the kramer character in a different manner now.

I think you're right Stan, I think Richards is Jewish.

Yes, we still all love Seinfeld.

Is he a racist?

I'm not saying the word isn't... but there's a difference between using aggro launguage and genuinely disliking a certain race.

Pity the man.
I know people who work on stage and I can tell you that they find it very frustrating to be interrupted and have people talking while they are trying to do their job.
I think a lot of those stand-up routines fly pretty close to the sun, offending people is what they do, and he's a very public example of what people love to see: failure(he's never been that funny).

I'd say it was rascially motivated, if it wasn't he wouldn't have gone on that little outburst of his.

If it really was that he was upset about them, then it showed that he didn't have the professionalism of keeping calm, good comedians tend to be in control of the audience, if they were bgging him he could have spun a clever joke or two to shut them up, make the audience laugh at them.

Well he did, but it wasn't in jest, it was in anger, thats when you know he's really just angry, I tink when most of the audience realised that they started leaving.

I doubt he's an incompetant comedian, he really came off across as a washed up once great actor with an inferiority complex.

This was like watching a train crash - the most horrific one you could imagine, in slow motion...
I can't believe he's gone and done this, it's really pathetic, I mean he's supposed to be a professional and a professional can take heckling can take pressure the pressure of performing, the high of success and fame and the low of it's decline...that's why they are called PROFESSIONALS...are people entitled to their breakdowns sure BUT not at another's cost, not by abusing them or anything about them...it's almost liek hitting your kid because you had a bad day - you just don't do it.

I don't know I had a bit of a "crazy mother' moment, and I'm not even a mum, but I am deeply disapponted...Comedy is one of my favourite things in life and that outburst hit hard
Don't know if i'm still a fan...I really don't

I'd like to say its all well and good, but no. He got angry, and showed that he was rascist when lacking in self control. If he wasn't the english language as many other swear words he could have used.

Comment by Cibbuano

I'm with you, Ahmed... when people are angry, I think you're more likely to see their real character. Sure, anyone can be politically correct when they're calm.

Do you mean to say that all readers of Swank suffer an addiction to cocaine or that all cocaine addicts read Swank? Not all cocaine addicted porn readers pass out, some of them sleep with beautiful supermodels and then pass out.

Comment by Ahmed

November 21st 2006 22:26
I agree with you on the second part, some do sleep with beautiful super models before passing out...

Comment by Cibbuano

November 21st 2006 22:32
patrick, I've never read Swank, actually, so I have no idea if I'd need to do cocaine to enjoy it.

seems like supermodels are snorting their own weight in cocaine these days!

I feel sorry for him, mostly when the Letterman audience is laughing at his poorly articulated apology. Seinfeld even has to ask the audience to stop laughing! (bet he's never had to do THAT before)

Well he could of had some better come backs for those hecklers I am not offended and not rascist either losen up
he made some mistakes and brothers call each other nigars every day And the security should of escorted them out this could have been worse if those nigars had a gun get over it.

Why dont we all get along and please pull the blanket from over your head its a comedy and mel needs an excuse, your fourth right you think mel was being funny mike was trying and didnt succeed mel has no excuse and either does Bush. Have you ever seen people make fun of people. So Mike forgot his medication or does he need an excuse

November 23rd 2006 02:09
Sorry Anon, I have no idea what you mean.

Put simply, in a fit of drunken rage Mel showed he was rascist, blatantly so.

In a fit of rage so did this 'kramer' character, th eonly difference is he was funny while doing it. He could have still called them niggers but could ahve worded it in a far more comedic fashion, he wasn't joking, he was venting.

I would like to know what the hecklers said Before I judge You judgemental people

Comment by Ahmed

November 23rd 2006 02:17
Erm, whatever they said did not justify a rascist retaliation.

If he cracked and just called the bastards or dickheads or something it would be another story, that he just cracked, but he cracked and kept on repeatedly calling them niggers this andthat, well it shows he's rascist.

Comment by Cibbuano

November 23rd 2006 02:19
I don't know what the hecklers were saying, but Richards said that the video only showed his outburst, not what provoked him.

Dealing with hecklers is definitely part of being a comedian, though.

My opinoin is that so long as he isn't apologising in front of the people he offended then he isn't really sorry.

Recall he said in the apology that he wanted to apologise to them face to face (or something like that)...

Why would the heckler ask for an apology to all African Americans? Isn't that sort of racist in itself? I'd like an apology and I am not an African American. Apparently due to the color of my skin, I do not deserve one.

Comment by Ahmed

November 26th 2006 19:53
Well of course you don't, not for the rascist tirade because that was directed towards african-americans

If I go hit someone over the head wtih a bat and come and apologise to you does it actually matter?

Comment by Anonymous

November 26th 2006 21:06
So what you are saying is you have to be an African American to be offended by his verbal assualt? Why wouldn't someone who is not African American be ashamed and embarrassed by his actions? Everyone should feel embarrassed and ashamed hence deserving an apology.

As soon as we stop looking for or reacting in a black vs white fashion (which will never happen in my lifetime), we can stop perpetuating the issue to begin with.

Comment by Ahmed

November 26th 2006 21:14
Thats true, you can blame kramer for offending people as a whole, for ruining a show and all, but the people he targetted deserve the most apology.

You could have been more clear in your original post and siad why kramer should have apologised to everyone.

I dunno, if I was African American, I would have taken great offense to '50 years ago we would have hung you up and poked at you with pitchforks'...

I mean saying 'nigger' has all kinds of confusing connotations these days, but saying that just hits straight to the heart of things, no?

it's like 'Remember when you guys were slaves, and we used to kill you? Oh, I miss those happy times!'

I think that those hecklers have no right to be so dispespectful to someone who is onstage trying to do his jokes. And I totaly think those hecklers shouldn't get any kind of compensation for this because it would only encourage them and more people to think it's ok to yell things out to people who are on stage. They have some nerve. They are trying to use their race to get money.same old crap.I would have said the same thing..you fuckin moolies..just think you can yell at people and it's ok when you say crackers or honky. He apologized ..now what they fuck else do you need?why aren't the hecklers paying Michael Richards for their rudeness. If anyone's feelings were hurt or anyone recieved pain..it was Michael Richards..not the hecklers.Michael Richards should stand up for himself in this and not let some dumbasses who were at the show one night cause him to loose his carrer over somethin so stupid. They caused him to get mad and say things that he really didn't mean.It was very rude..and they should not be able to get anything. There should be an anti-heckler law at comedy clubs.U want respect..then show the guy onstage some respect.. Sincerely Rose

I demand you make an apology to them!
It's also alright, apparently, for you to abuse Swank readers.

So where is my apology?

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MICHAEL RICHARDS?!?!?!?! He is sooooooooo disgusting!! I'm having trouble holding my food in!! And now while I"m watching his "apology" on Letterman, it's really coming out!! He's saying he's "not a racist", a blind deaf caveman would be convinced of the fact that he IS a racist!! He's even trying to make excuses 'I improvise on stage, I go into character' there are NO excuses!! He makes me sick!! I'd heard about the one particular word he keeps using over and over AND OVER again, but then when I saw it on YouTube, I must say the "that's what happens when you interupt a whiteman" comment, made me want to stick a fork up his ass! I will NEVER be able to watch a Seinfeld episode without a nauseous feeling everytime Kramer stumbles in. HE SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED ON STAGE TO PERFORM IN PUBLIC.......... EVER!! In cases like this, where you are a public figure (and have been for a long time) I feel we should stand by ZERO TOLERANCE!!
