Kino Sydney Nineteen
August 20th 2008 23:32
It's time to stop reading about great movies and get out there and try your own. If you're in Sydney, the event to be at is Kino Sydney, a short film open-mic night for aspiring filmmakers. ]
Matt Riviera posted a reminder for all us lazy critics, too screen-bound to leave our creaking chairs and actually experience the real world. It's easy enough for us to chastise filmmakers for not capturing a realistic sense of fear, anger or romance, but that's from our ivory tower, guilded with severed hands of tormented directors.
It's on September 29th, which is far enough away that you can pencil it in now, but cancel it when you realize that Border Patrol is on that night. Admit it, you love that show, despite the fear-inducing racist undertones it tries to disseminate.
Matt has also bitten the silver bullet and made a few of his own shorts for Kino, like this one in a laundromat:
I suspect it was written by someone other than Matt, simply because the Matt Riviera that I know would never do his own laundry. No, he's the type of gangsta that buys 7 pairs of new underwear every week, releasing his old ones into the wind at Centennial Park, like a musty flock of geese.

"Everyone is welcome, anyone can take part and we make no difference between makers and viewers (like YouTube! Out of the bedroom and down to the streets!).
Over the past 18 months some 200 films have been made by over 70 filmmakers, many of whom had never touched a camera before. These films have been shown to over 3,000 people at our monthly Kino nights, cabaret-style screenings which feature an open bar, home-cooked food, giveaways and performances."
