Karen Shakhnazarov Retrospective at the Russian Revolution Film Festival
September 22nd 2008 22:45
As we head into October, there's that familiar taste in the air... the Russian Revolution Film Festival will soon kick off, heralding the start of the summer series of cinema.
The festival will materialize around Australia from October 29 - November 19, but the REAL party happens here in Sydney, where 20/20 Filmsight plans to see as many Russian films as possible.
It seems like only yesterday that I reviewed "Daywatch", an explosive big-budget vampire movie from director Timur Bekmambetov, complete with hordes of Mongols and super-vampire-powers.
This year, it looks like the retrospective on Karen Shakhnazarov will be the showcase event, featuring "We Are Jazz Men", "Zero City" (pictured above) and his latest film, "The Vanished Empire".
Here's some of that great jazz sound in "We Are Jazz Men":
Ah, we're looking forward to that!

Russian films are usually very good, if an acquired taste. The Return is probably my favourite of the last decade, though I saw another heartbreakingly beautiful one last year called The Italian.
Have seen Tarkovsky's Solaris and Nostalghia but would love to explore more of his work.

Have you seen "Russian Ark"? - I saw it last year and it was quite a stunning and unique vision of a film.
