JJ Abram's Star Trek Movie Trailer
November 16th 2008 23:14
I remember Star Trek being the slow-paced, intellectual brother of "Star Wars", with a focus on discovery and exploration, rather than explosive and violence. While I was building X-Wings out of LEGO, my father would be trying to get me to pay attention to Shatner and Nimoy in the original Star Trek TV series.
Later, The Next Generation came out, and I was a little older, so I watched some of it, finding the new, sleek look appealing, as well as Marina Sirtis in that tight one-piece.
Still, the Star Trek franchise grew tumourous and foul, expanding into too many series, dulling the power of the original series. It quickly faded and receded into retro top 10 lists - just as quickly, George Lucas and his army of computer artists came back with a mushroom cloud explosion of Star Wars products.
JJ Abram's reboot of the franchise updates the Star Trek universe into one more appealing to a younger generation, weaned on CGI and Jason Bourne, and the trailer for the film looks astonishing, with heavy action and the potential for an interesting script.
I'm interested, I am, mainly because the cast is so appealing: Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty and John Cho as Sulu, hitting the new movie with appealing actors capable of pulling their weight.
If the script is solid, the movie could be a wild success, ensuring that Gene Roddenberry's creation will continue its series of movies and television shows, possibly infecting a new generation of youngsters, wiping the stain of "The Phantom Menace" from their memories.

And of course some amazing music has graced the films over the years too (mostly by Jerry Goldsmith) - so Michael Giacchino tackling this is an exciting proposition for me.
Simon Pegg can do no wrong either - he might just be a case of slightly odd, but brilliantly inspired casting!

The new ST franchise, starting from Enterprise, has totally alienated itself from the hard core fans who for all these years have been loyally supporting it.
I doubt this new movie will win back the old fans. But sadly, this is a sign of the times, just like how GL alienated his hard core fans by making the blasphemous PT...
