iPhone Video
January 10th 2007 21:54
The Internet is gyrating from the hordes of tech-heads getting spun up about Apple's new iPhone, an all-in-one MP3 player, phone and internet connection.
Engadget had the opening scoop as Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone to cheers and adulation.
And I almost threw my rotten tomatoes aside - I'm not a big fan of cell phones, but I appreciate forward-moving technology. Other companies have tried to offer similar products, but have left the design to engineers and managers. The iPhone is the first product that looks like a product for people, similar to the iPod, when it came out.
There's some jeering from the peanut gallery, naturally... people are complaining about the price, a steep $600, and the contract, which says you must sign on with Cingular for two years. Furthermore, tech columnists have been skeptical about the touch sensitive screen, which has been tried before, to limited appeal.
If anyone can bring it home, I think shareholders are confident that Apple can... the steep price is a minimal guarantee on quality, at least... Jobs said that Apple is hoping for 1% of the market, which they'll surely get. Right?

Film & TV on DVD
I will wait until iriver or someone more reliable decides to release one, will be more affodable then too.
Though I am still hard pressed to think of a time where TV on a tiny little screen would bve worthwhile.

I don't know much about cellphones (my own is probably from the 80s), but don't existing cellphones have, basically, all the features of the iPhone and more?

barracuda, you'll have to buy one, then. Expect it to be $1000, though!

I think, like all Apple products, the iPhone is very well designed. It appeals to almost everyone. Even if it does not match other cell phones in terms of functionality, it will sell like hot cakes once launched. I would love to own one!

Some problems it has is that it is not open market, up in the states it will be released on the cingular carrier and no other carrier.
It will be difficult to unlock it as sme of its features are fine tuned to run on cingular, so you'll be looking to mess with the firmware (ie not cool).
It also has a lot of features mainstream users don't want, i mena, look at the iPod, it plays music, period. the iPhone is full of extra features no one will want, and as such it costs a lot.
So meh, it all comes down to how brainless people are about brandnames now, once it goes on sale and its flaws are made apparent.

Apple really are going the Sony way with the iPhone throwing in heaps of extras. The iPhone is not a widescreen iPod with a phone built in as was expected, it is over the top tech that no one will want to use.
Sure it has some of iPods characteristics, but Apple just lost the magic somewhere inbewteen 'iPhone' and 'iComptuer'.
I'll just go and drop the bombshell I guess, the iPhone is the equivalent of a Playstation 3 minus crappy marketting.

I love innovative technology! We have a nintendo wii here. We stayed up till 5am playing it, and from what I hear, a few people are having wii parties all over the place.
I wonder how the iPhone will do.

I don't think I'll buy it or at least I will wait until it comes free with my next mac...so probably never! But it looks like and awesome product and it was just a matter of time...although i secretly think that they had this planned from day 1...and they are just milking us!
Nice one Steve!

If you don't have to be "the first nerd on the block" to have this device--which is admittedly quite cool--you could wait a year or two and they will practically be giving them away when you open a new checking account, just like all technology.
