How does Jude Law's cross-dressing compare?

September 27th 2009 21:55
Jude Law is looking stunning as Minx in the 2009 Sally Potter film Rage.

Law has always been know as a pretty-boy, but thanks to a role requiring him to crossdress we can now confirm he also makes a pretty girl.

It is always refreshing to see A-listers, action heros, and womanisers getting in touch with their feminine sides at the movies.

Law is almost as pretty as Cillian Murphy in Breakfast On Pluto (2005, Neil Jordan).

Of course we had the awesome trio of Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo, dragging it up in To Wong Foo (1995, Beeban Kidron).

Another notable drag appearance was Arnold Schwarzenegger in Junior (1994, Ivan Reitman). That movie was great for so many reasons. Arnie appears in a wig as a frumpy middle-aged woman, he is also pregnant, he is also a scientist. Which is the more unrealistic concept?

Then we have Johnny Depp. A man who seems to be rarely out of drag. He played a transvestite in Ed Wood (1994, Tim Burton). More recently he played Bon Bon opposite Javier Bardem in a gay Cuban prison. Very pretty. A Jude Law/Cillian Murphy pretty, but with the confidence to retain the facial hair.

He needs a darker shade of lippie but otherwise, fabulous! I'm with you on this: "It is always refreshing to see A-listers, action heros, and womanisers getting in touch with their feminine sides at the movies." It shows that they're secure in their masculinity.

More than that, though, it's nice to finally see men cross dressing for reasons other than laughs. Dressing like a woman should not be considered demeaning.

hi Journeywoman,

Dressing like a woman should not be considered demeaning.

very well said!

i think Jude Law needs to work on his feminine voice, i dont know if he kept it deep because the character is some kind of eastern european?

i really gained a new level of respect for Swayze after seeing him in To Wong Foo, he did it with such grace and dignity, and the script included all these fantastic insights into serious womens issues like domestic violence and sexual assault etc

Me too, I loved that film. Swayze was brilliant, as was John Leguizamo (I was going through a Leguizamo phase then after falling for him as Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, was stoked to see he had range as an actor) but by far the best part was how accepting the people who hosted them were... you expected them to be small minded hicks, but they were the opposite. So encouraging to see, even though it was fictional.

Rage looks interesting. And there's John Leguizamo again, he hasn't aged a day

Wow - I wouldn't even have recognised him!

Morgan - as soon as I spotted the title of your article I hoped you'd included Arnie in Junior. A Reitman film too far for sure, and much funnier when you look at the stills - like the great one you've got above!

hi Morgan,

Law looks pretty good in drag and I loved Depp in Before Night falls and Ed Wood.

When i think actors cross dressing the first to come to mind is always Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot.

the funniest cross dressing escapade for me is Kurt Russell in Tango and Cash...in both these cases though none are look as good as Law does though.

hi Journeywoman,

yeah Leguizamo really hasnt aged, has he?

i was watching Pineapple Express the other night and Gary Cole really hasnt aged since American Gothic . . . there must be a secret anti-aging potion going around

hi Michelle,

he is barely recogniseable!

hi Matt,

the bigger and tougher the guy, the more excellent it is to see him in drag!

hi Janet,

drag in the movies is like my niche topic of extensive knowledge, if i ever went on Einstein Factor i would pick that as my category and beat the Brains Trust

hi Fog,

there is a bit of a Winehouse vibe there, great observation!

i would recommend checking out your local JBhifi if you are searching for Before Night Falls, or getting an independent retailer to order it in

hi Kristen,

he has such a perfect face for drag . . . if he ever needed a career change im sure he would be very successful as a showgirl

hi JohnDoe,

another memorable one is Val Kilmer in Willow, he dresses as a woman to excape a raging husband, but he has long hair in the film and the crazy lady garb in quite cute

hi Toni,

To Wong Foo is a brilliant film, i always keep an eye out for it on dvd, i would love it in my collection

hi Wilson,

im glad you agree with my "stunning" assessment . . . some men have wonderful adaptable faces that look great as both genders, im sure it somes down to symmetry or some such formula of features
