Hola Mexico Film Festival 2009
November 9th 2009 07:23
You’re understanding of Mexican cinema may be limited to midget-battling wrestlers, but the North American country is becoming increasingly well known for its thriving film industry. Thankfully, in Australia we have the Hola Mexico Film Festival for a yearly reminder of the silver screen greatness churned out by this culturally resilient country.
The 2009 festival is almost upon us and it’s going to be the biggest yet, showcasing more than 30 films in six cities.
Besides featuring some of the greatest Mexican flicks of the past 12 months, including the multi-award-winning “Sin Nombre” and epic “Tear This Heart Out”, the festival will also present five films of the golden age mastermind, Julio Braco, as well as a special section on Sexy-Comedias, Mexico’s infamous and often outrageous comedies about the carnal act.
The Hola Mexico Film Festival has grown substantially in recent years and the 2009 tour has seen cities in the USA and New Zealand become part of the itinerary. Now back in Australia, it’s an excellent chance for local film nuts to brush up on some fantastic Latin cinema, so try not to miss out!
The Hola Mexico Film Festival tours Australia November 18 through to December 20, taking in the cities of Sydney (November 18-30), Canberra (November 27-30), Brisbane (December 1-6), Adelaide (December 4-9), Perth (December 10-15) and Melbourne (December 15-20). Check out the official site here.

So, no gangster stuff in the docos, but a couple of the features have organised crime hanging about in the background: "Sin Nombre" and "Amar A Morir" both look like they feature a crim subplot - and both sound like good stuff.
Hey Tracy - indeed, I'm really looking forward to this! They have some great films on show.
