Preview for Harold and Kumar 2

December 3rd 2007 22:07
Harold and Kumar 2 Escape from Guantanamo Bay interrogation
Update: There's an R-rated trailer available, with more scenes from the film. Warning contains foul language, comedic racism and the finest backside to ever appear in a trailer. Yowza!

Back in 2006, I gushed over Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, praising the movie for portraying ethnic Americans as normal people, something that isn't done successfully in most mainstream movies.

The popularity of the first film compelled the cast and crew to make a second, titled Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, which is set to be released in April 2008.

/Film has a preview, with six photos from the production.

Realistically, the sequel is likely to bomb... there's a 1 minute trailer out, and, while it's amusing, I wonder if the entire movie will be absurdly silly.

The beauty of the first Harold and Kumar movie is that, between all the ridiculous adventures, you could sense that Harold and Kumar were real people, hemmed in by a society that didn't have a place for them. Will the sequel flesh this theme out even more?

Hi Cib,
yes I loved that film too. Weirdly, maybe, I didn't really pick up on the 'they are not caucasion' thang, I related to them as just being silly students. But, in retrospect, I can see it now. A guy I used to correspond with years ago explained to me why he was pissed off with AMerican films, particularly ones set in Claifornia. He told me that white people were now a minority there!

So, when you see their movies, it does not reprsent the real society, but a 'white washed' one (pun intended!). The African, Hispanic and Asian American people usually play maniacs, crims, or some other marginal type, or the side kick, and often get killed by the 'third reel', as they say in the business.

Silly really, but it does say something about the white supremacist attitudes still lingering on in the board rooms and places of power, does it not?

Anyway, we can only hope for the future, and that there are more films showing life as it is, particularly in America, without the racial subjugation.

cheers and thanks for making me think about this again.

fog, you hit it right on the head... most movies are so overwhelmingly white, with ethnic characters playing stereotypes or minor characters. Perhaps African Americans have moved into the limelight a little, with Denzel and Will Smith getting bigger roles, but Asians, Indians and Middle Easterners are still rarely seen.

er, also, Harold and Kumar was notable for having the Asian guy, Harold, desire a Caucasian girl and getting her. Partway through the movie, there's one line that knocked me flat when I heard it... it goes by subtly, but the implications are huge.

Kumar
: And what about Cindy (a Korean girl)?! She was looking hot tonight! The fact that you're not into her just might make you gay!

Harold
: It doesn't matter what I do, I'm going to end up with Cindy Kim anyway.

Dammit Cibby,
now I definitely MUST see the movie again, which will be no pain, as it is very likeable. It struck me more as a nice boys version of Road Trip combined with a smattering of Animal House, but the boys are sweet and well behaved in comparison.

As for that girlfriend, again it didn't even register with me...which I'm rather glad of actually, as I've never thought race or skin colour came into theatre at all.

If an actor is competent in his/her craft, that is they understand what they are saying, what then should be the intonation and stress of the voice, and posture, this all comes together to work in simpatico, which helps the audience understand what is being portrayed and so they can suspend dis-believe...and get emotionally involved in the drama of the work.

The greatest test of this is seeing Shakespeare's work.

For years I had endured watching dreadful acting and directed shows. Then I saw a company that knew what they were doing...everything suddenly made sense!

While not trying to compare the film and old WIll baby's work, it at least demonstrated the actors had a naturalness about them.

Anyhoo...maybe I should start thinking of writing something that mixes it all up. It just annoys me that we, as a general audience and society STILL have to go through this ludicrous 'initiation' process whereby the new 'ethnic on the block' has to play the idiot comic relief, especially if there is a sniff of romance suggested.

Maybe it is the way I'm wired, but discovering something new, venturing out of one's own culture is the biggest turn on for me. Seeing different peoples, different religions and races, only makes the whole thing more natural, more attractive.

ooops! sorry...starting to rave on here! I keep getting reminded to keep it short.

cheers

Anyhoo...

fog - rant away... I'd say most Americans, Australians and Canadians that I meet are quite tolerant, without any visible prejudices.

and shakespeare definitely needs solid acting... the language is too dense and archaic otherwise...
