Guy Ritchie's "RocknRolla" looks like a Guy Ritchie film

August 14th 2008 22:18
RocknRolla Gerard Butler
Guy Ritchie used to be known as the director that brought British crime back into the cinemas; his pair of features, "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch" were a kinetic whirlwind of Cockney slang and colourful characters.

Us simple Canadians guffawed at his movies, believing that England was a place full of Samoan gangsters, Pikies and Jason Stratham-like protagonists.

Then the word Mockney came out in association with Ritchie, and we realized that we were being lead down a golden path to a slick world of London gangsters.

Still, his films are energetic and contain enough humour to make "Lock, Stock" and "Snatch" turn out to be engrossing entertainment.

On that level, Ritchie is back in original form with "RocknRolla", a movie that looks a lot like "Snatch", even from the trailer:

Looks fun, doesn't it?

It's got a hip collection of actors, from Gerard Butler, Jeremy Piven, Tom Wilkinson and Ludacris.

For sex appeal, there's the one solitary female actress, Thandie Newton, who we're supposed to go wild over, like a pack of braying hyenas.

The Guardian Film Blog notes that "RocknRolla" has only been given 800 screens in the US, which is a terribly small number for a reasonably well-packed movie like this. Warner Bros gave the reason for the limited release as the movie was 'too English".

Too English?

I thought they spoke English in the United States?

At least Warner Bros. were honest in their reasons. I would have thought they would make something up in order to not offend the English..

Hi Cib,

This one looks OK, but I was surprised that the third part of Ritchie's crime troilogy "Revolver" went unnoticed despite it being a superior philsophical crime thriller starring Stratham and Ray Liotta. Sure most people hated it, but personally I enjoyed it more than Loclk Stock (To deivative of classics like get carter and The Italian Job for me to fully embrace). ...Snatch still sits as his finest achievement.

Hey Cib!

I've been looking forward to and blogging about this film for a while now, mostly because of Gerard Butler (!) and I am really disappointed to hear how few theaters it will be opening in. I've heard that it is intended to be a return to the vibe of Snatch and Lock Stock, and I sincerely hope it comes to a theater near me!

Natalie, I knew you'd get your Beta crowd up in cheers for more Butler...

JD, haven't seen Revolver, worth it? I enjoyed Snatch, though it's a little bit of candy...

jon, surprisingly, being 'too English' must not seem insulting to them?

Jason, yeah, it looks pleasant enough...

Cibby, having spend some years in GB, I can tell you that the English are very proud of 'being English'. They make no apologies about it, and they scoff at the notion that they should change to be understood by the 'uncultured' Americans.

For Guy Ritchie to make his films more favourable to the Americans would be taking a dive on his standards.

You know it! We're gonna find those 800 theaters and keep going to the film until they are forced to create a wider opening!

Don't mess with the Beta GIrls!

SWG, I wonder if anyone would call me 'too Canadian' for American audiences?

Natalie, this crowd of Beta Girls scares me a little.

Mis, good luck tracking it down!
