Great White Sharks leaping out of the water!

January 13th 2008 22:37
Update: The UK Telegraph has a series of stunning pictures, showing the Great Whites working real hard to get their sealy dinners.

Great White Shark leaping in the air eating a seal

Great White Shark in Mexico
My friend, James Prentice, sent me this link to a fantastic clip.... it's part of the new BBC series, Planet Earth, a nature documentary that rips the lid off the animal kingdom, giving us a clearer picture about what goes on around us. It's narrated by David Attenborough, which means you'll believe anything he says, since he says it with an English accent.

James wrote the following to me:

"My parents gave me this DVD set for xmas - called Planet Earth, a BBC production. Quite possibly the best documentary I've ever watched. 5 discs, 550 mins of nature goodness and David Attenborough as the narrator to boot. Apparently the most expensive documentary series ever filmed - all done in High Def cameras.

This is one excerpt that I found online. I guarantee you'll love this:"

I wrote back:

"James - thanks for the link. I can't get enough of Great Whites, even though I'm terrified of them. I had planned to go the beach, but your terrifying video has left me shrunken with fear.

Do you think I'd be foolish enough to swim across the bay? Not likely... I'm slower than a seal, but I've got razor-sharp wits, compelling me to take the bus, instead."

This particular clip is a of Great White Sharks breaching to annihilated seals off the coast of South Africa. Wikipedia has something to say on the subject:

"They typically hunt using an "ambush" technique, taking their prey by surprise from below... the hunting technique of the white shark varies with the species it hunts. When hunting Cape fur seals off Seal Island, South Africa; the shark will ambush it from below at high speeds and hit the seal at mid-body. They go so fast that they actually breach out of the water."

It doesn't sound like a big deal; after all, dolphins jump out of the water all the time, sometimes kicking balls through fake field goal posts. The difference is - Great Whites can reach lengths of up to 6 or 7 m, weighing over 2 tons.

Yowza!

*LOL* Gee whiz! I've gone nearly this whole month and resisted the temptation to mention sharks in my blog!

Seriously, thanks for showing this. They've been showing this series over here on the Discovery Channel. They really have some neat stuff, eh????
What is really cool is that they have "Shark Week" around either June or July--I think June. I just keep an eye on the TV listings!!!! Nice post!

These shots are just incredible, Cibbuano. Great Whites certainly don't muck around!

David Attenborough recently came under fire for taking captive animals into the wild for his documentaries, but these sharks can't be faked. Amazing!

The series is amazing. I came out a few years ago I think and it's probably one of the best documentaries out there at the moment. I haven't seen it yet so I think I might be buying this when I see it. Try and find the clip of this fungal virus that attacks insects each one designed to a different bug. There's a cool clip of an infected ant being dragged out of the colony and dumped in risk of it killing the whole community. Pretty insane stuff for little creatures hehe.

James, sometimes Discovery irritates me (some of the documentaries feel so watered down), but the BBC series are always spectacular. The high def picture quality is especially impressive.

Chris, I didn't hear that about the captive animals... that's a shame...

I'm gobsmacked.
Astonishing stuff.
I want the DVD series!
I knew Great White were powerful, but I didn't know they were able to breach like that.
I fear for my dreams tonight.

Saw this doco about three years ago on cable and it left me awestruck...seems Bruce could jump on the back of the boat and rip Quint in two.

I know they've been the subject of many horror/scary stories, but sharks are adorable and amazing creatures.

I also love the BBC production of Planet Earth, watch some when it was on SBS last year? Oh I so need to put that on my birthday wishlist.
