Frank Herbert's Dune to be remade again
December 25th 2007 00:15
After the wild success of the Lord of the Rings, the studios are scratching their heads over how best to make the ching-kaching on Frank Herbert's legendary sci-fi series, Dune and its sequels.
Wait... haven't they done this? Well, yes.
Dune has been the subject of starry film eyes since the 70s, when Alejandro Jodorowsky was attached the project, envisioning a 10-hour movie. That would have been insane, but I think it probably would have done the novel justice.
The version most people are familiar with is the David Lynch film, released in 1984. It was a massive failure, despite the brilliant cast and the effort that Lynch made to capture the tone of the novel. In the end, though, he lost control of the project and the final movie feels rushed in the last half.
Then there was a made-for-TV series, but we'll ignore that.
Now Peter Berg has the greenlight to start work on a remake to Dune, with a massive budget and, presumably, a lot of CGI effects.
Peter Berg is a director with a CV that doesn't inspire a lot of hope in me... his latest work was The Kingdom, which doesn't inspire much faith in me.
I'd love to see another take on Dune, though... who knows - it might be brilliant!

It was preachy and confusing.
FX looked fake in many parts.
Even when recut it seemed disjointed and rushed.
The book was excellent.
So a well made version should be made.

Damo, I really liked the look of Lynch's version... it seemed very rushed, though, and lost a lot of the ecological themes in the book.
Jon, yes, the series as a whole is excellent... weird, but with a wonderful theme and brilliant history. His son penned some utter garbage, eh? I still read them, though.

My fingers are crossed. I loved the movie and the book. I am not sure about Peter Berg. Liked his work in "Friday Night Lights" but not in "The Kingdom."
