EW's 50 Best High School Movies

September 10th 2006 19:06
Napoleon Dynamite hiding in a field
I don't like Entertainment Weekly. For starters, it's a pulpy magazine with inane articles glorifying consumption of anything to do with celebrities and Hollywood movies.

Lately, they've been pumping out the 'Top 50' Lists in an attempt to grab traffic an attention.

And I'm falling right into their grubby plan.

EW's Top 50 High School Movies

I don't really like movies about high school. Sure, there's lots of great source material for a script about peer pressure, confidence and individuality, but really, it's just a bunch of kids running around, playing like they're adults.

That doesn't mean that there aren't some great movies on this list:

#47) Napoleon Dynamite

I'd have put this a lot higher on the list since it goes beyond the mere veil of high school and is, actually, a great, inventive movie.

#33) Hoop Dreams

A documentary that uses two real-life stories, but plays them out like a fantastically scripted play of despair and abandon. You thought basketball was just shooting a couple of balls with your friends? Forget about it.

Plus, that one kid could slam dunk when he was 14 or something. Impressive!

#32) Scream

Despite the muddy sequels it inspired, the original Scream was a triumph of self-mocking satire, combined with a chilly twist of bloody lime. Sure, I could have done without Neve Campbell, and the guy that played her boyfriend was a Master-knobgoblin, but the nutty guy was fantastic, and who could forget that scene in the garage where Rose McGowan's nipples were terrified?

Boyz N the Hood - Ice Cube
#8) Boyz N the Hood

Sure, gangsta rap became mainstream popular, but how many people, after seeing Boyz N the Hood, all of a sudden became really really thankful that they didn't grow up in a ghetto?

John, I agree with you - the rankings aren't what I'd pick.

I also thought of Pump Up the Volume! It was pretty big when I was young...

Watched Pump Up The Volume again recently and it stands up as a great anti authoritarian teen comedy with substance.

I watched Ridgemont High recently and noticed Nick Cage looking dopey at the burger place.

Judge Renhold and Sean Penn always make me laugh in Fast Times. And Phoebe was a goddess.

she was, wasn't she?

Were all those actors over 18 when they did that movie?

i think high school movies always feature actors over 18 haha

and i actually have forgotten the scene with Rose McGowan in Scream...i vaguely remember her getting squished by the garage doors or something?

yeah, she gets pulled up by the garage door and broken in half. Never squeeze through tight openings.

Anyone see Chumscrubber?

It divided critics but I thought it was one of the better high school films Ive seen.

Also realized that EW left off another of my faves Better Off Dead starring John Cusack.
