Day of the Dead remake - leaked online!
April 8th 2008 01:23
A year and a half ago, I posted a sad little post on how George A. Romero's "Day of the Dead" was being remade, starring Ving Rhames and Mena Suvari. While the original is sometimes panned by zombieheads who preferred the satirical tone of "Dawn of the Dead", I quite enjoyed "Day", despite the awful 80s soundtrack.
It pointed at a future that Romero saw from the outset, where the zombies overrun the Earth, not by their own virtues, but by the inability of people to work together and stay unified. The same themes are present in "Day", but magnified: it takes place in a tiny, fortified bunker, with a group of soldiers and scientists holding out against the invasion.
The remake, on the other hand, looked awful, especially from the trailer. Fans blew up, screaming for blood and shooting streams of ichor into the Hollywood marketing team. According to Wikipedia, it's been pulled from theatrical release and set for a little straight to DVD action.
The writer, Jeffrey Riddick, was interviewed about the project and claimed to be paying tribute to Romero's original vision:
Decide for yourself if the movie looks watchable:
The movie seems to have been leaked online, and is ripe for the picking, if you were so inclined. Personally, I don't think I'll bother...

"It's going to be a separate movie," he told us. "We wanted to pay homage to the original with the military and the scientists and the socially relevant stuff that George Romero always does, but we wanted to put a fresh spin on it."

Film & TV on DVD
So many horror remakes, so little quality found. I dig on Ving and Mena but like you can't bring myself to even watch the clip.
Its not that the Romero Zombie films are high art, but they serve a schlock purpose that still entertains decades after release. My personal fave is the original Night of the Living Dead but all his films had a social commentary that added relevance.
That being said Zack Snyder's Dawn remake was worthy of owning.
