And... here comes a remake of Suspiria

Suspiria poster Argento

Update (7/8/08) - Slashfilm is leaping to the forefront of breaking news with the confirmation that Natalie Portman has agreed to star in Green's remake of "Suspiria". While Portman can, perhaps, convey the innocence and wide-eyed fear necessary for the role, she seems a poor choice for the role of a dancer. Regardless of the choice of actress, I'm totally aghast at the idea of a remake of "Suspiria", and I'll watch it, if only to heap scorn.

* * *

In news that'll make Bryn howl with fury, Dario Argento's horror classic, "Suspiria", has been greenlit for a remake.

I received this news from Matt Dykzeul, who left a helpful comment and link on an earlier post:

"With the potential of a Suspiria remake on the horizon, I think horror fans are pretty sure anythings possible, Cib."

The link was to a post on MTVnews, who interviewed director David Gordon Green with the news of the "Suspiria" adaptation.

On the decision to pick him as director, Green says:

"“No, it doesn’t make a lick of sense,” David Gordon Green laughed with MTV News, revealing that he’s already written and hopes to direct a new version of the 1977 film. “But it’s wicked. I love it, plot holes and everything.

“‘Suspiria’ is a classic for me,” he continued. “I want to be scared. I want to be afraid.”"

I haven't seen any of Green's films, but they've been heralded with praise. Nonetheless, do fans feel confident with Green taking on a controversial remake?

Horror fans will be stumbling in the street, moaning for his blood... Argento's movies were considered untouchable, works of art that fans would cast their prostrate bodies at, in sacrifice.

With a remake, what will be left? Are there any decent horror remakes out there?

What does Green think about his talent with the movie?

"But put it in the hands of an artist like Green and it suddenly becomes “some classy shiat,” the director enthused."

Ah... a joke, I guess.

Commenter on the MTV post were divided, with some piling on damning criticism, others in love with Green:

" What a horrible travesty to leave such an uneducated man at the helm of a remake of an incredibly artistic, genuinely well made film as Suspiria.

I question if he has even seen the film, or has simply had it described to him."

and

"David Gordon Green is by far the most brilliant filmmaker of his generation. He is an inspired choice for this remake. Especially since the original is a bit overrated in the first place."

With this much controversy over the film, it'll probably do really well, with fans of Green going to support his movie, and fans of Argento paying to watch the movie, just to criticize it.

Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! This is just wrong. Stay away from the Argento classics. They were all brilliant. Greene and the rest of America need to respect that.

anon, I know what you mean. I just saw Suspiria recently, and I'd be content to live with that experience. It doesn't need to be remade. They won't be able to make it in the same circumstances, since it'll be for a mainstream audience.
