Sunday Doubles coming back to the Chauvel Cinema
April 11th 2008 00:00
It was with great relish that I read about the Chauvel Cinema starting up its Sunday Double Features again...
Last year, the Sunday Doubles were my must-see events... Every Sunday, for $11, you'd see two movies, back-to-back. They were usually old classics, and you'd never get a chance to see them anywhere else in Sydney... I saw fantastic films by Kurosawa, Elia Kazan, Woody Allen and Jean-Pierre Melville.
Seeing those old films on the big screen lit up my week... sure, you can watch movies on DVD, but unless you've got the gold bars to outfit your living room with a home cinema setup, you're just a sucker squinting at a tiny screen.
Sure, I watched "Annie Hall" on my laptop, liked it, gave it a great review - but it wasn't until I saw it at the Chauvel that I really felt like I was watching Allen's original vision. It's one of my favourite movies thanks to that screening.
Here's a list of the double features coming to the Chauvel... we're starting off with "The Time Machine" and "Yellow Submarine" - yes, the adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic sci-fi novel, paired with the psychedelic undersea adventures of John, Paul, George and Ringo.
Other excellent movies coming up: "Carrie" one week, then "Barfly" the next. "The Manchurian Candidate" and Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" in one afternoon, then "Deliverance" the next week, then "Enter the Dragon" the next.
Oh, it's going to be a good winter.
To tide you over the weekend, here's a compilation of some great scenes from Annie Hall. The video is a little dark, but if you've already seen the movie, it's enough to wax nostalgic.

I mentioned on a different post that we lost our little cinema here in Newcastle. They did fabulous double features like these ones you have mentioned. And they used to sell the best ice-cold make-up orange cordial!
Your post makes me hanker for those lazy winter afternoons.
And Annie Hall is one of my all time faves as well.
Envy-inducing post!
