Bob Le Flameur by Jean-Pierre Melville - Sydney Film Festival Preview
June 13th 2006 02:30
This Friday, the fabulous Sydney Film Festival is screening Jean-Pierre Melville's Bob Le Flameur, a black-n-white French gangster film that inspired modern filmmakers like Q. Tarantino, J. Woo, M. Scorcese and others...
It's showing at Dendy's at Circular Quay, and it's likely to sell-out, with Sydneysiders snapping up tickets at a frantic pace in view of the cold rainy weather of late.
I know what the skeptics are thinking: 'Hunh? French gangsters? What, do they rob people at baguette-point for sacks of Roquefort cheese? Ho ho ho, I so clever!'.
Your stereotypes are totally unfounded... these 50s French films show a seedy underworld inhabited by dark characters. Remember, France is a nation of people that had the cojones to get up and behead the entire monarchy... in the English-speaking world, we're still under the yoke, so to speak.
And if you think that French is an elegant language, fit only for poetry and pots of honey, think again. Until you've heard French-Canadian Hells Angels talking about smashing faces into windows, you've got nothing to stand on.
Of course, I've even heard the surreal - the same Hells Angels, hopped up on X, hugging and talking about love. These are giant French man, with those devilish tattoos and leather vests, dancing and getting loved up. Shit, French gangsters in the 50s were so simple to comprehend in comparison...

thanks, sisi! Which review? I'd like to go see this film and do a proper review, though.
And this friday, there's an amazing Hong Kong movie showing at the festival!
