Attenborough narrates leopard slug sex scene
March 27th 2008 22:30
David Attenborough is best known for narrating exciting BBC documentaries on eagles or lions or elephant seals or great white sharks. Something big, majestic and powerful, an animal that inspires fear and terror in the viewers, giving us a sweaty respect for the raw power of nature.
Less well-known are his segments on invertebrates, such as slugs.
But slugs he does narrate, including this scene of two leopard slugs having messy, slimy sex.
Warning: there is a lot of repulsive slug action in this clip. We're talking about ropes of mucous, penis-on-penis action, and a lot of alien-type sound effects.
I may have labelled this as disgusting, but, actually, it's quite amazing, and beautiful. The documentary filmmakers lit the act so well that the two entwined penises look like an shapeshifting flower. Wonderous!
Nature is both remarkably beautiful and distressingly bizarre. When the two come together, you know we're missing out on the good stuff, locked away in our cities and concrete jungles.

When I saw the title of this, I thought it'd be boring. It's far from boring, though... if you saw this happen in the jungle, you'd just shake your head in disbelief and say 'what IS that?'

james, the end is a nasty fall to the jungle floor. That's gotta hurt!
Maryam, I found it on Kottke
Tracy, stellar photography, definitely. The penises were lit especially well.
