A year on from its Spanish release and six months since a limited run in the US, Agora is finally making its way to Australia.
After he completed 2004’s The Sea Inside, Alejandro Amenábar spent his spare time studying the stars and becoming fascinated by questions of astronomy and extraterrestrial life. But instead of turning that newfound passion to a film about the future, the Spanish filmmaker looked to the past, taking a particular interest in the fourth century story of Hypatia, the female astronomer whose scientific breakthroughs were jeopardised by the Christian influx into Alexandria and a subsequent religious power play.
The result is Agora, a historical epic starring Rachel Weisz as Hypatia, Oscar Isaac as her student, Orestes, and Max Minghella as Davus, Hypatia’s slave. The film tells a tale that’s fascinating in its own right, but also shares some remarkable parallels with contemporary events.
