A notable quote about Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire
September 1st 2007 18:52
A few months ago, I had the great fortune of seeing Elia Kazan's A Streetcar Named Desire on the big screen at the Chauvel Cinema. It was magnificent - but don't let me repeat myself, I reviewed it here.
Natalie loves Marlon Brando, and who wouldn't? What an animal, a true savage, melted down and poured into the shaky mold of a working-class man. He belongs out in the savannah, clubbing animals and feasting on raw flesh.
I read the Pajiba review of the film, and there's an interesting quote from the documentary on the DVD extras.
Before they filmed the movie, they were rehearsing for the Broadway version, and Brando was basically terrorizing Jessica Tandy, who played Blanche.
Man, never tell an actor to be less good. Let it go all the way and take the Oscars home to the bank.

"(Brando) began to dominate Blanche and throw the balance of the play off… And it very much worried (director Elia) Kazan, and he said, ‘What am I supposed to do, say to the guy, ‘Be less good’?"
Man, never tell an actor to be less good. Let it go all the way and take the Oscars home to the bank.
