20/20 Filmsight - December 2008

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

You loved "Iron Man"? Wish that there were more movies based on comic books?

Looks like your wish is coming true... Den of Geek has done the unthinkable and compiled a list of all the confirmed comic book adaptations coming out in the near future, and it's over 75 movies.
We've got movies like Barbarella, another Dark Knight, Akira, Dr. Strange and ElfQuest.

It's no secret that, here at Orble, we're increasingly grim skeptics of the Hollywood move into remakes and adaptations, finding nearly every film to be worse than the source material, and only a few to compare on near equal footing.

The list? Flash Gordon and GI Joe. Gambit and the Green Lantern. Ghost in the Shell and Gamekeepers.

That's just the titles with 'G'.

Oh, the horror. The humanity!

Well, that suggests that the next three years will be filled with these awful movies. Has it always been like this? Did critics in the 80s get weary of camp comedies and slasher horrors? Did they roll their eyes when Arnie and Stallone starred in another predictable film?

Tetsuo Iron Man Japanese film

Lists of movies that you 'must' see tend to disappoint... they're usually full of predictable suggestions of great movies that feature on dozens of other lists.

Well, I'm pretty happy with Wildgrounds list of "10 Japanese Movies You Must See" simply because I haven't seen any of them, and the one line description of each movie is so tantalizing that I want to go out and rent them all.

Check this: Kubrick was heavily influenced by this Japanesee flick, "Funeral Parade of Roses" for his adaptation of "A Clockwork Orange":

Wildgrounds calls it a "gay version of Oedipus Rex" - one not to miss!

It's a list full of influential movies, ones that we must watch, in order to really appreciate the depth and versatility of our contemporary directors. A Japanese "Taxi Driver"? Influences on Jim Jarmusch? Terrific - I'm 10 seconds away from watching them all on 10 different television screens.

The Dark Knight standing on a building
Warner Bros is a sticky little pie of trouble with the Chinese censorship board... "The Dark Knight" opened to massive crowds in the US and the rest of the English-speaking world and the producers were tormented by the arousing thought of pumping the Chinese market for millions of renminbi.

Unfortunately, they didn't realize that the plot of the movie, concerning some bad Chinese criminals, would raise some eyebrows in the Chinese government, which only allows 20 foreign films per year into the country

Boxing Day presents: DVDs for everyone!

December 26th 2008 04:34

Spoutblog wants you to get DVDs as Christmas presents, but that's an obvious choice, one that shows how little you enjoy shopping for people. I should know - I buy DVDs for everyone I know.

Kurt Russell in The Thing
If Christmas for you is anything like it is for me, you'll need to prepare an emergency entertainment kit for the two weeks you'll be visiting the folks.

Yep, Christmas means back-to-back family dinners, making small talk with uncles that give you financial advice and eating fruitcake that you know was originally made years ago

Buck Rogers film adaptation
There have been rumours flying around, hastily denied, but it seems that the unfathomable is true: Frank Miller, comic artist of the moment, has been signed to direct the upcoming film adaptation of Buck Rogers.

Slashfilm is decidedly nervous about the news, announcing it earlier this week

Today, we went to visit with an old friend, who was now married and the proud mother of a gurgling little baby. Her husband was a tall, well-dressed man with a amicable behaviour and a massive DVD collection.

Massive! He had an entire bookshelf packed with DVDs but they were all pirated, the type that you might found squirreled away in Chinatown. They come in flat plastic packages, with dubious cover art and strange backpage synposes

New Watchmen Trailer!

December 22nd 2008 12:03
From our happy friends at Paramount and Network PR comes a new trailer for the highly anticipated "Watchmen" movie, which is rumoured to come out early next year.

Well, for it to be in theatres by March, some small miracles will have to be worked, but I'm sure legions of fanboys are climbing Mount Olympus right now, goats and other sacrificial animals on their backs

Watch Gattaca for free on Hulu

December 19th 2008 11:21
Uma Thurman in Gattaca black suit

It's a fine movie, one that brought an interesting concept of what the future might hold, a world where DNA testing and control leads to a society where the advantaged give birth to genetically perfect children... the rest of the population is deemed inferior, doomed to sweep floors.

An American version of Akira?

Akira DVD cover

The original Japanese animated film "Akira" was a violent shock to watch in the theatre for a special midnight screening. I was terrified, and then depressed, as the film decided to destroy everything.

The Hobbit will commence filming in 2010

The Hobbit water colour Misty Mountain

The Hobbit was one of my most memorable novels as a kid; the incredible atmosphere of the book was perfect for a children's book, with an epic story, clever tricks and puzzles and a big red dragon.

Zoolander sequel in the works

December 15th 2008 10:42
Ben Stiller Zoolander
Slashfilm nicely points out that Zoolander, despite its status as a 'totally wicked movie' among fratkids, only pulled in around $46 million, which is hardly enough of a response to justify making a sequel, which is almost guaranteed to be on the harsh side of critical reception.

The first movie was amusing enough, as a piece of MTV pop culture, giving us celebrity cameos and ridiculous slapstick, while making fun of the modeling business. The outrageous energy of the opening scenes was distinctly marred by the loose threads of the second half, trying desperately to wrap things up

20/20 Filmsight goes to China!

Three Gorges China beautiful river canyon
As you read this, on Dec. 10, I'm soaring acrossthe equator, over the fertile coffee plantations of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, on my way to China, where I'll be vacationing for a month.

Yes, it's winter there and, no, I'm not ready for it. That cold Siberian wind cuts through me easily, as if I were mere gauze

Andy Samberg and his crew of cronies blew the YouTube audience away with their short music video called "Dick in a Box", but this new video, with much higher production values, has an even raunchier name: "Jizz in my Pants".

The Kids in the Hall dressed as a wedding party

This is excellent news - The Kids in the Hall, an offbeat, eccentric comedy troupe from Canada, has been touring around the continent with a new stage show. It's been a wild success, so much that the Kids have agreed to do an 8-episode series for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

It'd be easy to shrug this film off... "Memories of Matsuko" is, on topical viewings, a cartoon-coloured, over-saturated musical with emotionally manipulative material.

Pinning murder on the Executive Koala

Executive Koala bunny suit discussion
Who said anything about this movie making sense? Minoru Kawasaki's absurdist comedy defies conventional logic as it tells the tale of a high-powered koala who finds his human girlfriend murdered one day. It's called "Executive Koala" - but there's also a giant bunny head in the film, pictured above.

Complaints about bestiality aside, this promises to be one of the stranger screenings at the Japanese Film Festival, with the director arriving in Sydney to hold a little Q&A after the film
