20/20 Filmsight - May 2008

Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate

Roman Polanski was a colourful character in cinema, having created two fantastic films in Hollywood, "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby", as well as an entire catalogue of well-received films in Europe and America.

He might be remembered best, though, as the widowed husband of Sharon Tate, the actress that was murdered by the infamous Manson Family.

No, wait... actually, Polanski is probably best known for the fact that he plead guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1978, and is considered a fugitive from the United States.

Polanski certainly liked young girls... reader Sugar Hush sent in a link about movie controversies which reminds us that Polanski actually dated Nastassja Kinski, who was 15 at the time.

"If found guilty Roman Polanski would face a 50-year prison sentence in 1977, and he eventually filmed the British novel in France to avoid being extradited for prosecution. It became one of Hollywood’s most famous controversies, darkly overshadowing the movie to this day. (Wikipedia claims Polanski had previously had an affair with the movie’s star, Nastassja Kinski, when she was 15, and IMDB quotes her as saying that “As a director, he was 10 times more wonderful than as a lover.”)"

Hmmm... given the critical success of Chinatown, Polanski must have been dynamite in bed...

You absolutely MUST see this...

Michael Jackson Smooth Criminal Lean

Kids my own age grew up with Michael Jackson being the dancer to end all dancers; the moonwalk, the zombie dance, the crazy Smooth Criminal tilt - we sat around for ages trying to replicate his moves.

"Smooth Criminal"
was a big favourite... combining a wonderfully rich world, with slick editing and impressive costumes. The image of Jackson in that white suit has been firmly ingrained in our minds as the ultimate Michael Jackson video.

The style of the video was further immortalized in the video game "Moonwalker", which, apparently, used Jackson's hat as a weapon. Our not to reason why.

Unknown to me, but making a lot of sense is the idea that Jackson was heavily influenced by Fred Astaire, the Hollywood dance legend.

A Fred Astaire fan put together this brilliant music video of Jackson's "Smooth Criminal", synced to Fred Astaire's "The Band Wagon", a 1953 movie that shows exactly where the style of "Smooth Criminal" came from. Absolutely incredible:

Astaire's dance partner in red is Cyd Charisse... those glorious legs, those arms, the effortless grace with which she moves. Women in these old movies captured an otherworldly sense of elegance that seemed to lift them above the realm of mere mortals.

Oh, those legs! Oh my, those legs!

This video is one of the best that I've ever seen, I think, edited to match the video, Fred Astaire seems perfectly at home with that syncopated Jackson beat, and you can see the moves that Jackson ripped off. Slick stuff, worth watching over and over...

Encounters at the End of the World

I'm in a bit of a rush, but I took a look at the program for the Sydney Film Festival, and I've earmarked a few films that I'd like to see:

Silent Light sun sets behind magnificent trees
We're just a couple of weeks away from the biggest cinematic event of the year, the Sydney Film Festival, and I'm injecting myself daily with oxyacetylene in preparation for the big burnout.

On Neerav Bhatt's blog, I wrote a guest post highlighting some of the film that I am interested in seeing, like Carlos Reygadas' "Silent Night" (pictured above), or "Tokyo Sonata", which was well-received in Cannes

Monkey - Journey to the West

Monkey Journey to the West Pig Saint Blindfolded
This month's new releases from Siren Visual includes a four-film pack of "Monkey - Journey to the West", films from the Shaw Brothers Studio based on the famous novel written in the 1590s during the Ming Dynasty in China.

The novel is one of the four great novels in Chinese history, considered mandatory reading for students, but most people are probably familiar with the TV show, Monkey King from the 70s

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

It's been a long time since Steven Spielberg and George Lucas sat down together to give adoring fans another hit of Indiana Jones. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" came out in 1981, as a fun side-project for the two directors, but ended up being a massive hit, resonating with the legions of young boys and girls that crave adventure.

An exhaustive look at Woody Allen's career on The Cinematic Art, a thoughtful film blog that excels in criticism and analysis.

Seeing the iconic image of the Brooklyn Bridge, filmed by Allen for "Manhattan", it's hard not to be overwhelmed by the director's love for New York City, and his raw zeal for the moving image

Mother of Tears Dario Argento
It's been a long time coming, but, finally, horror fans will get the last film in The Three Mothers Trilogy.

Of course, I refer to the films by Dario Argento, which include "Suspiria", "Inferno" and "Mother of Tears"; the latter will be released on June 6 in this fine year of 2008

Ricky Gervais and Rob Lowe facing off with Nerf guns
Ricky Gervais' latest project is the alternate-reality comedy film, "This Side of the Truth", a movie that imagines a world where no one ever lies - and Gervais becomes the first.

I Watch Stuff nicely points out that Gervais' blog about the production of the movie is a damn funny read,
especially when he shoots co-star Jason Bateman in the ass with a Nerf dartgun

Nightmare Alley

Nightmare Alley Tyrone Powers
This 1947 film noir is staged around the traveling carnival, using the temptations of wealth and trickery to bring the heavy hands of fate on the main character, Stan, played by Tyrone Power.

Stan starts off as a young apprentice to a mind reader named Zeena, who, it is rumoured, used to be in the 'big-time', before everything came crashing down. Towed along behind her is her alcoholic husband, Pete, who appears so downtrodden and wretched, that he has to beg for money from his wife for a drink

I'm going to post an image that I captured last week... I was looking for articles to write about, and I found this collection of images from the 60s on the Daily Mail.

It was an article about how celebrities in those days were so well-mannered and well-behaved, in sharp contract, of course, to the celebrities of today, who are always seen "falling out of nightclubs drunk or showing off a little too much leg or cleavage

Dario Argento's "Suspiria" is one of his most renowned and best loved films, with his mastery of audio and visual language on full effect for this barely coherent horror movie centered on a coven of witches.

Tokyo Story
The Art Gallery of NSW is fighting against Wednesday night television by opening the museum up to film, music and art. It's called Art After Hours, and it's a fantastic series of events that make you realize that this is why we choose to live in the city, with the traffic, the pollution and the wretched hive of villainy.

To be honest, I'm furious with myself. I've known about this for years and never bothered to go. Wednesday nights are tough - you've in the middle of the week and it's a good night to relax before gearing up for the weekend

Some of our Australian readers may often wonder "What's going on in America? This is a country that invented the Internet, deep-fried Coca Cola, elected George Bush, worships Britney Spears and built the atom bomb. What's up?"

Well, I don't know much about Spears and atom bombs, but I think America is a fabulous place to visit, with breathtaking scenery, a powerful musical history and the ability to entertain 24/7

Lasse Gjertsen Hyperactive Amateur
Lasse Gjertsen is Norwegian multimedia artist that came to prominence with his wonderfully edited music clips, "Amateur" and "Hyperactive" (both videos down below).

His latest piece, "Lasse does London", is short, but hits the point very quickly, taking sampled sounds from London, along with their footage, and mixing it all into one noisy, boiling cauldron. The shocking thing is realizing that there's actually a musical progression, and it sounds damn good

Mick Jagger 60s with Marianne Faithful

Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" is one of those movies that is universally loved by fresh-eyed college boys, drawn by its themes of alienation and the nature of choice. As a first-year university student, it was easily my favourite movie, appealing to me with Kubrick's sterile sense of style, the wonderful mise-en-scene, and the heady rush of sex and violence.

Batman Dark Knight Joker Heath Ledger
The new Batman movie is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, especially after star actor, Heath Ledger, was found dead in NYC last year.

Ledger starred as the Joker, a notorious villain in the comic book scene, a villain with a perverted sense of humour and an infinite well of cruelty. Batman is to be played by Christian Bale, a well-respected actor, and Two-Face by Aaron Eckhart
