2007 Bicycle Film Festival
November 20th 2007 22:25
The Bicycle Film Festival will arrive in Sydney from Nov. 28 to Dec. 2, all in one weekend, all at Dendys Opera Quays cinema.
At first glance, the idea of a bicycle themed film question seems odd. After all, why the bicycle? Why not a Toaster Film Festival or even a Film Festival Film Festival?
But then, you realize that the bicycle has been a massive contribution to human civilization... developed in parallel with the automobile, it's allowed the poor city dweller to rise above the demeaning walk.
The role of the bicycle in cinema has been profound. Look at de Sica's Bicycle Thieves, or Beijing Bicycle, or even E.T. and the Muppet Caper! There's a sense of freedom attached to the bicycle, even today, as you see carefree cyclists laughing as they pass the standstill traffic on the Harbour Bridge at rush hour. C'est la vie!
The films are all from Canada and the US, but one that people are raving about is Monkey Warfare, an award winning Canadian film that focuses on a pair of junk scavengers on bikes. I'll be reviewing the movie in the next couple of days.
Here's a trailer for the festival:
