Professor Brothers - The Gospel of Frank

September 28th 2007 19:21
Man, I love Professor Brothers. What a hilarious way to spin the Bible into a short film that combines great writing with witty, perfectly timed stills.

It's a loosely fictional version of the story of Jesus, and it's got bottled water, ribs and witches in it. That's a good recipe!

Saturday Morning Classics: Ghostbusters

September 28th 2007 17:45
Filmation's Ghostbusters
No.

Not The Real Ghostbusters, based on the movie with Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd. That cartoon was very popular and was watched by everyone.

No, I'm talking about Filmation's Ghostbusters, which fought over the name with the other guys.

Instead of proton packs and great special effects, Filmation's Ghostbusters was based on a live-action children's TV show that must have been light on the budget, as they caught ghosts with bubble gum and lassos.

Also, they had a gorilla.

It was horrible. As a kid, I'd plan out my morning cartoon schedule in advance, anticipating to see Egon and the gang take on a devlish gang of spectres, only to realize that I had tuned into the wrong show.

Watch the trailer and see what YOU think:

Still, watching the opening credits makes me remember fond days. And though it wasn't as good, it still had ghosts and ghostbusting. What else do you need?

The Cave of the Yellow Dog

September 27th 2007 23:25

What a month! I went from total ignorance about Mongolian films to having watched three: Mongolian Ping Pong, The Story of the Weeping Camel, and now The Cave of the Yellow Dog.

Awww... I had the same idea for a post, but Matt Tobey on Offsprung beat me to it, mainly because I was too lazy to do anything about it.

George Lucas is all about the Star Wars TV

September 24th 2007 22:08
George Lucas has already stated that there would be no more movies from Lucasfilm, which means that we'll never get the Episodes VII, VIII and IX, which is too bad, because Star Wars IX:Jedi Rampage has a nice ring to it(I made that up).

Of course, purists are thankful that he's stopped the carnage after the visionless prequels

Blind Shaft

September 23rd 2007 22:55
Blind Shaft
Blind Shaft is the debut feature film from Li Yang, a Chinese filmmaker who lived abroad in Germany for years, studying and working in the film industry. His return to China led him to make this film, about the harsh conditions of the illegal coal mines in China.

The film was banned in China, for unspecific reasons... the subject of the film is a touchy one in China, where poor safety practises in the coal mines have ensured that China's mines are the deadliest in the world

Ok, ok, this is a fake movie trailer... the Collegehumour guys have put together a pretty funny fake trailer of what a Hollywood produced Gummi Bears movie might look like, with all the cliched moments we've come to expect from La-la-land.

The 80s were a great time to make the transition from child to pubescent child... 80s comedy movies are a silly collection of ribald, bawdy tales with excessive, gratuitous nudity, nonsensical plots with messy endings, and stereotypical characters.

I watched a lot of movies as a kid, and my parents were kind enough not to censor movies at home. We watched them for entertainment value, ignoring the rating altogether, which was a pretty carefree life

Mongolian Ping Pong

Mongolian Ping Pong standing by a horse in the grasslands
I watched The Story of the Weeping Camel last month, which was the first Mongolian film that I've seen... it was lazily hypnotic, with the simple lines of the Mongolian landscape casting the viewers into a dreamlike state of thoughts and murmurs.

My second Mongolian film came shortly after; last night, I watched Mongolian Ping Pong, a 2005 movie from Chinese director Hao Ning. Following in the styles of the Sixth Generation of Chinese directors, he's assembled a beautiful story with unprofessional actors, set in front of the gorgeous grasslands of Mongolia

Even Stephen Colbert Carell Daily Show

When Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart appear together on television, you'll never know for certain who they're going to make fun of. Certainly, they're left-leaning, but Stewart and Colbert are happy to make fun of anyone that falls in their targets.

What is a movie worth?

September 17th 2007 23:45
Annie Hall
The idea of 'worth' is an odd one... immediately, the concept of money enters into the equation, as currency provides us with a quantitative estimate of the value of an object.

Of course, there are things in life that aren't easily priced. The life of a loved one, for example, seems priceless compared to commercial products

Daywatch Russian vampire movie
This is the jaw-dropping Russian sequel to 2004's Nightwatch by the same director, Timur Bekmambetov, carrying on the story of an epic battle between two groups of vampires, the Light Others and the Dark Others.

Russian vampires, going head-to-head over the fate of the world and a mysterious artifact called the Chalk of Fate, which sounds ominously like a Harry Potter sequel

... but was it a great year for movies?

2007 is likely to be a massive moneymaker for the major studios, who pulled in $4.15 B. That's a lot of money

Dinner Game Le Diner du cons
One of my favourite French comedies is the totally insubstantial Francis Veber film, Le Diner De Cons, or The Dinner Game, in English.

It's one of those typically light comedies that plays on imbecility and language, and is easily watched when sampling several bottles of wine. I've watched it several times, and it's always managed to make me laugh

Stardust hole in the wall to stormhold
Neil Gaiman rose to acclaim by, along with Alan Moore, taking back comic books for adults, without sacrificing creativity and imagination... his 75-issue Sandman comics are a true phenomenon, bringing great storytelling and unforgettable characters to a fantasy world.

Gaiman wrote a short novel called Stardust, about a town in England that has a gate to the magical kingdom of Stormhold, and the novella was adapted into a film, Stardust

The Banquet Zhou Xun
This 2006 movie was a contender for the Best Foreign Movie Oscar prize, directed by Feng Xiaogang, starring Zhang Ziyi and Ge You.

The Banquet is a lavish historical epic, depicting the court of intrigue and deception of the Tang Dynasty in ancient China. Stunning sets, beautiful costumes, truly elegant setpieces, all choreographed to give the audience a sense of how opulent the dynasty was

Lebowski-fest opens in the UK

Lebowski Festival Poster
The Big Lebowski is a 1998 film from the Coen brothers, and is my favourite from their excellent filmography.

It's a cult classic, with hordes of ardent fans and rabid followers. It's the type of movie that gets better from subsequent viewings, especially while under the influence. I've noticed that more of my male friends like it compared to my female friends, which may say something about the appeal of the movie

Lust Caution Ang Lee Se Jie
Man, I haven't been this eager for a film since Hot Fuzz.

I'm a big fan of Chinese cinema, though I'm not terribly well-experienced with it, and though Ang Lee's last few movies have been pandering to Oscar audiences, his latest looks like a ferocious melange of art and passion
