20/20 Filmsight - October 2006

Star Wars fans spare no expense when making fan films:

Darth Vader himself conducts the Stormtrooper Philharmonic Orchestra, using a lightsaber as a baton.

The first performance will be The Imperial March, followed by Pachabel's Canon and then a light-hearted rendition of The Macarena.

Top 10 Scariest Videogames

October 30th 2006 18:52
Just in time for Halloween comes this video compilation of the Top 10 Scariest Video Games - from GameTrailers.com.

I'm shuddering just thinking about it.

Film fanatics often turn their noses down at video games, scoffing at the shallow narratives and senseless violence. But as this clip shows, improved technology and careful attention to atmosphere and mood have forged a new arena.

Damn, these games are scary. Drawing from classic horror films, some of the newer games take horror to a new level, as you become the main character, chased by zombies and ghosts.

No, I can't play these games. I'm too easily drawn into the video game world, and I'll go into shock the first time a zombie bites me from behind.

Instead, I prefer games that have ubiquitous sunshine and beautiful green fields. With rainbows and marshmallow bunnies. And smiling leprechauns, not the evil ones.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Gong Li and Zhang ZiYi in Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha was highly anticipated when it was in production, as Asianophiles got high blood pressure imagining Zhang ZiYi and Gong Li cast together in a geisha movie, wrapped in silk and fluttering with cherry blossoms.

Tomorrow, I'm going to post an article deploring the use of CGI breast physics to sell video games. I'm going to claim that I prefer real women. Tomorrow.

What are real women? Flesh and Blood, my friend, with hair and teeth thrown in for good measure

It's not really my place to start recommending restaurants - that's usually left to other, foodier bloggers. But I do like to eat, and I found this jem of a place that just can't be held down.

Really, I shouldn't even be telling you about this place. If you go with all your friends, there won't be a table left for me. And it's a small place. And I'm hungry

The Departed - Film Preview

October 20th 2006 03:36
The Departed movie poster Matt Damon Leo Di Caprio
I'm pretty excited to see Martin Scorcese's latest film, The Departed, featuring Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio. It looks like an excellent return to form for Scorcese, whose gangster epics, like Goodfellas and Casino, ran strong in American audiences.

In fact, it's so predictable to gush with enthusiasm about this flick, so I'm not going to do that

Great White Sharks ravage Whale Carcass

Great White Shark swimming in the deep blue ocean
This clip from a documentary about Great White Sharks shows unreal footage of a ravenous orgy of feeding sharks on a rotting whale carcass.

You've got to watch it - I was mesmerized. Hell, anyone that grew up in the 80s, after Jaws came out has an unnatural, deep-rooted fear of Great Whites

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid movie poster
One of the mose famous American westerns ever made, it catapulted Robert Redford into movie stardom and cemented Paul Newman as a leading man capable of complex roles.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is the 'based on real-life' story of Butch Cassidy, famed train robber and outlaw. The movie follows Cassidy's life loosely, with more story-friendly plot points, but really outdoes itself with the chemistry between Newman and Redford

I've been seeing trailers for this movie for a long time... even though the cast looked stellar, the trailer bored the hell out of me, showing a dysfunctional family on a painful West Coast road trip. Oh, so funny.
